Nah, come on, Ford have owned Jag for yonks, so you can't just blame BL. They are good handling, reliable cars that come higher than the Germans in customer satisfaction surveys...but until very recently they had this stupid shit retro styling. Its not difficult to work it out, if you design cars to appeal to people one step away from the chapel of rest, you're going to be appealing to a diminishing pool of customers. I mean, what the hell was the point of the X-Type? You make a car for younger buyers and then saddle it with looks your granny would find old-fashioned. Ford just had a typical American's view of Britain, that we all live in castles or are loveable cockernee chimney sweeps, and designed cars to reflect that. The bloody MINI didn't help either, but at least that was retro done well.

Its not ugly, it's just old. Even when it was new. Look, there are always going to be people who love the ye olde worlde look of Jags, but a lot more will be put off by them; too golf club and pringle sweater, too Northern mill owner. Personally I find the new XF much more attractive, especially the interior, which is fantastic (its the one thing Premier Automotive did well, Jag, LR, Aston and even Volvo interiors are all superb). The only bit I don't like is the headlight treatment, but that's mainly because the ones on the concept looked way better.

It looks nice, but it also appears to have the turning circle of an oil tanker, and small country between you and the front/back of the car. As DaGaffer says the XF is much nicer, although I'd take an XKR any day.

seriously, that's fucking unbelievably beautiful! I love mercs, I love the W126. I was behind a CLS today, I know it's a modern merc but it's still gorgeous.

I'm so tempted; my next car is likely to be a BMW 130i, but i'm thinking Toyota Aygo for a mega cheap run around (cheap tax, tyres, insurance, 60 mpg) for going to Tesco and the train station and buy a well looked after SEC and throw a some money at it for a restoration and a project car.

I've been wanting an SEC for some time. Something like this as a starting block?

I can appreciate SECs on a technical level, they're kind of imperious, but their image is...well, not pleasant, and I don't think they'd be fun to drive either. I have to hold my hands up and say I don't think I'll ever own an Merc, even though I know they make some great cars. Image again.

Its nice but it doesn't sit right with me - the engine bay is filthy, always a sign the owner hasn't looked after it as well as he claims.

You should remember that these were extremely expensive cars in their day, and they will still have extremely expensive car repair bills. The W140 S-classes are gorgeous cars to drive (bit ugly though) and there are plenty of bargains around, but when you have to pay £100+ for a coil pack (and there are 12 on the S600) you begin to realise just how expensive they can be.

And DaGaffer, if you can't see the love and attention to detail that has gone into that black SEC, you deserve to be blindfolded and shot by a Chinaman in military uniform!

My W210 E-class has 202,000 miles on her now. Theres a bit of rust on the wings that I'll sort this year or next but tbh when I'm doing 90 down the M1 and I can't hear the engine or tyres, and I don't have to correct the steering every 10 seconds, I don't care.

Oh I can appreciate the craftsmanship, but its just a shame its been so woefully misdirected; Its like when you see pictures of some Saudi prince's bathroom; you know its made of solid gold and cost a fortune, and you also know its fucking hideous. In fact, I take back the Chinese pimp jibe (the white AMG is his wheels), this is pure eighties Saudi, I can think of no worse endorsment.
