Hmmmm, ive got myself into a bit of a mess recently that I think you all might like to hear about, it all started in an RE lesson a few days back when we went to the computer room to do some piss easy work, as always when we go to the Computer room, I finished work in the First 5 minutes and spent the rest of the lesson messing around, this included me creating a txt file called "Hello! Add stuff to this notepad file!.txt" in the folder that we were all saving our work, kind of like a forum thread for all the newbies in my class. Anyhow, people added stuff to it (Just spam, nothing important) and at the end of the lesson I left it on the network and thought nothing of it.

THE NEXT DAY
Head of Year Mr. Piper (Big, tall scary bloke) comes to visit me during a Maths lesson and demands to speak to me outside, i go out there and get a right royal bollocking about how I have misused the network by allowing people to send "unauthorised comunications" and that im "abusing the facilities." When I go to the computer room that lunch time i then find that all my network privillages (including access to my courcework) has been denied! And thats not all, in assembly today Mr. Piper moaned at the whole yeargroup for misbehaving during lessons and abusing the school computer facilities, including the words (And I quote to the best of my memory... "Futhermore, some idiot (and I use this word delibaretely) has created a shared file on the school network allowing people to freely abuse the facilities yadda yadda yadda yadda..."

Eep! :uhoh:

Dan, mateleh, let this be a lesson to you...
...when pulling off stuff like this...
always make sure you DON'T have ownership of the files you're messing with!!3

ps. imo the head is abusing this minor incident to get something off his chest and make himself feel good.

Or maybe he just dosen't like the idea of the pupils having freedom of speech, either that or he honestly thinks a simple Text file could corrupt the network!

hehe chances are he won't be very nice to you either ;)
as I said: be contrite and he may well forgive you. he may even cut you some slack due to you taking the initiative and asking him [nicely] to unlock your account.
if I were him tho, I'd prolly make you IT bum-boy for a week or three, and task you with such joys as refilling all network printers with paper, clearing wastepaper baskets and other gems :D

Pfft.

That's nothing, my college tried to bring the law down on me (literally, they wanted me in court) for a similar incident.

To sum it up: we were doing something in class, a VB project that used data controls to manipulate access databases. The EXACT code worked for one guy, but not another. The sample code from which it was copied from was on the lecturer's machine. I asked if I could sit and have a look. I played with the program, had a look at it and that was that. Being a database program, I added and removed the entries I put into the databse, testing the program. I had full permission to do this.

The next day, the college spout utter BULLSHIT about how I must have hacked into my lecturer's login area, and how I edited several databse files and other files, and then corrupted his space so he could not log on any more. They were completely oblivious to the fact that the lecturer could not logon because his login hadn't pinged off the network (good old reliable college computers caused the machine to freeze, so I had to switch it off manually).

Anyway, they took my statement, my mate's statment, who I was helping, spouted crap about how I had broken the data protection act (which I hadn't, I know that thing inside and out), and eventually had to settle with sending me a legal warning. They originally intended me to go to court.

Heh heh. Smart, Dan. The modern equivalent of passing notes around the class.

Course now that many of us have grown up and are living in the real world we're able to freely abuse work resourses. I've been using 'my' network to distribute illegal software, host Op Flash games and download patches.

Ironically I'm the guy who has to have a 'quiet word' with staff if we find too many mpegs or mp3s in their personal folders. Heh.

There's a point in there somewhere.

Sounds like a lot of whispering there, TdC. :)

I dread to think what sort of stuff is tucked away on your network. ;)

Isn't it amazing how if you'd done that in a Silicoln valley company you'd get promoted, and you do it in school and get a bollocking.

Hang in there - you'll be finished before you know what hit ya.

Bah theres only one follow up to being called an idiot by your head of year and thats to decimate the network :)

or, you could do what students did to most of the new Dell P3's we had at my college which was take the optiplex's lid off (via two side buttons) and gut the machine leaving just the mobo/case/psu/monitor, took em nearly a month til they started padlocking em  :D

I managed to fuck our network at school and to this day I don't know how. They were old shitty things that had a version of windows that was older than me. Our school was terrible for IT, I had to drop out of advanced buniness and finance for several reasons, the main one being useless equipment and teachers. I completed an assignment on a computer once, only to find it wouldn't save to my disk, wouldn't save to network, and wouldn't print out, it never got fixed so my work was all for nothing.

Pen and paper?

You know those long pointy objects that leak a substance a bit like printer ink onto the rectagular flat white objects you put into printers.

I got a warning from head of computers / networks at university. Stupid old me was trying to set up icq on the network (this was before they had a firewall version). Icq was blocked and not allowed to be used on the network.

For those people who use Novell will know that you can send messages to other user. I was in halls of residence so decided to, what i thought was, send a message to all other students in halls asking "does anyone know how to set up icq on the network?"

Stupid old me had sent the message to the WHOLE network, so yes everyone in halls got the message but so did all students at uni, all admin staff, management, lectures and yes head of computers / uni network. Basically 1000s of computers throughtout the university got my messaage :)

Next time i tried to log on to the network there was something wrong with myt account so i went into uni to see someone at the help desk..... "ahh Mr Wakerley.... head of computer systems would like a word with you"

Of course i said i didn't know what i was doing, it was a accident blah blah blah - was given an offical verbal warning.

Stupid idiots, little did they know i was playing counterstrike all of my final year on the network muahaha

ahahahah something like that happened to me when I had just started out being a Novell boffin [eons ago].
You see, there are different ways to send a message in a Novell network as Novell defines a difference between being connected to a server and logged in to the network [I'm being a little bit overly simplistic here ;)]
Anyhoo, ickle me types in a message that server X will be rebooted and thus all users have to log out to protect their work....and sends it to every user on the entire network.
Only 14000 peeps [give or take] got it, so you can imagine how many coffees I had to get the head of IT/Novell before I was forgiven hehe
