Let's assume we're in a country where iTrip's are legal to use.

I have an iPod photo. Previously I had an iTrip that plugs in the top, sound quality was pretty good - no problems with it. However, I managed to snap it off the top, so I need to purchase a new one.

Now, there are various ones to buy - I wondered if anyone had any views?

  • New top-slot Griffon iTrip with digital display
  • Bottom iTrip, ie uses the power connector
  • Other makes of transmitter?

Does anyone know if the Griffon bottom one has a power-through slot?

Any advice is welcome, cheers.

PS: I'm purchasing this for my car. Ideally I'd connect it directly to the stereo, perhaps with the CD changer slot? However, apart from the £99-150 kits you can get, is there a simpler/cheaper way to do it without replacing the head unit?

Didn't know what an iTrip was so I googled it.

So you can get your ipod music to play on the radio.

OK

If you and I were travelling down the motorway could I tune into the same station and listen to your ipod music ? Whats the range limit ? Does it interfere with regular frequencies ? If I'm trying to listen to Jazz FM next door am I gonna end up getting neighbour Eggy ipod FM ?

Eggy I went to Halfords and bought kit (Harmon Kardon i think) where I get a screen showing my Ipod options and a little button that acts like the touch wheel. It can be connected to your car radio via the FM input or via a digital input depending on if your car radio has the connection.

I paid £130 for mine with free installation. Works a treat.

Dont know if there is a cheaper way I took the simple option.

Yes you can - the range is around 100m or so, it's quite impressive. However, as it's FM waves, the quality is lower than a direct input into your car stereo, hence I'm considering spending the extra.

Don't forget, transmitting over FM in this country is illegal without a license.

Thats a cheap little one but if your car has a cd changer option on the head unit or a AUX you could just connect it with a stero to rca lead i did not like this as it looked messy on my car as i had to come through the glove box. Lots of them Here
So i just use this This
It works really well. And you can save preset stations on it. It dose not have any way of powering your ipod.

I'll sell you my iTrip for £20 - hardly used - got a CD MP3 player instead. In fact I'm completely disillusioned with iPods in general - can't charge them up and play them at the same time, and the battery life on my Mini is about as long as a gnat's fart.

The companies that make them are American; it's legal to transmit FM over short distances in most USA states.

I've got a thing called a Monster IcarPlay, found it much better than the itrip for cars as it plugs in ciggy lighter socket and keeps the ipod batt topped up.
