I'm looking for a recruitment agency who do the 'whole package'. What I mean is I've been told of an agency called 'hayes'* whc overlook your CV, train you on interview techniques etc. I've looked and it seems that hayes don't do a manchester branch. So does anyone know/recommend any recruitment agencies?

tia :D

* I think that's what it was called.

I don’t work in the Recruitment field but I did have my name on a few books looking for IT work. If IT's your field you are maybe best to hunt down 'specialist' IT Recruitment companies.

Generally speaking Hayes are very good but watch you dont get stung by paying a huge amount of your pay cheque back to whoever it is you decide to opt with. IT's such a big field it can also depend on your 'specialised field.

Other option is to send your CV off to the larger companies directly. They usually have details on their sites.

In addition the larger job websites have a fair amount of advice and tips on them.

Here's a cple of links to get you started.

http://www.monster.co.uk/
http://www.manpower.co.uk/

If you are still at UNI might be worth checking out one of their Recruitment Fairs or checking some general ones out.....

Best of luck!

And find another career later, cos IT has been going down the drain for years (jobwise).

Just avoid the Universities. We're all imploding. Well, most of us.

Cheers for the advice.

I left uni last summer and have been doing the usual, sending my CV off to large companies and doing recruitment fairs. I'm just getting desperate now, I don't get rejection letters anymore! :(

As for IT going through the floor, aye I know but there's nothing I can think of going for. Especially since I have a computing degree.

If I hd the choice again after graduating with a computing degree, I'd have went in a completely different direction.

But not before notching up 3 or 4 years of IT experience first, earning a wage and working on another career in the background.

The agencies I've dealt with in the past all asked for work experience as soon as I walked in the door. But with enough effort and smarts , anything is possible.

A word of advice:

TRUST NO-ONE.

I've been an IT contractor for years, and there's one thing that the n00bs never get, even if I tell em (but they find out for themselves sooner or later):

Agents are Bastards.

They'd sell their own grandmother to take a bigger cut from you. They lie to you. they lie to their clients and they threaten you with "never working in the industry again" when you find 'em out.

ALL of them. there are NO good ones (even the one I used to go out with was loverly as pie at home, total cnut at work).

that is all...

Remind me, one of my friends was at an interview, just after she had graduated, and they told her that she did not have enough experience for the position. She is quite quiet, but also quite highly strung, and she explained to them, quite forcefully, that she had spent the last five years proving she had the ability to learn quickly, and if that wasn't good enough for them, then why had they invited her to the interview in the first place?

She got the job. :D

Useful sites

I've just recently started work again as a Sysadmin after being unemployed since June. By far the best site I've used for jobs is http://www.cwjobs.co.uk

They seem to have the biggest selection of stuff by a country mile.
http://www.planetrecruit.com are pretty good as well.

The trouble with both of these is that a lot of jobs are posted by agencies, so there's still a middle-man to go through. I wouldn't go so far as to call agents cnuts, (apart from the ones that cold call you trying to dump Java programmers on you when you have nothing to do with recruitment or programming. :twak: ) but they get comission on everyone they place, so they tend to try to shunt you into all sorts of unsuitable positions. It's worth bearing that in mind when they phone you up with a "fantastic you placement that's just opened up in an amazing company"...

To avoid agencies, try these:
http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/
http://www.lgjobs.co.uk
http://www.jobsgopublic.co.uk

The lower two are local government and public sector jobs, so 90% of the positions there will be the same. Public sector IT jobs do pay very well in some places, and they're not so fussy about experience, plus there's all the usual employee benefits (Union, support network, final salary pension, good holidays)

Finally, keep your eye on these usenet groups: uk.jobs.wanted & uk.jobs.offered. The latter gets spammed by the job sites/agencies by some automated tasks and the former is useful fo discussing prospects (don't waste your tijme posting your CV there, though)

Sorry, I know you were just asking about agencies, but there's some alternatives for you. Relying purely on some agents to get you a decent job is like trying to actually catch a fish in the manchester ship canal: all you'll get is old boots.
