i currently run a p4 2.5, with a radeon 9700 pro, 512 rdram and use bt isdn to connect to net - cant get either cable or broadband just now. I connect via eidosnet at 128k, but the best ping i can get is 100 and only briefly then i go from 140-300, does anyone know a faster isp or even a good low pinging server?

thanks

I'm with clara.net, who are very good, you don't mention which game for your server, so can't help there.

Wether you connect at 64k or 128k won't make much difference to your ping, Latency/Bandwidth thingie there.

I only ever use 64k, and on good BF1942 servers connect with a ping around the 35-40 mark, HL servers when I play those mods, (DoD tonight at nine on Game.net!!!!!!!!!!), I ping at 50-60 or so. One thing about these pings is they are very stable, none of this leaping around of many of my cable chums at present.

I hope this helps.

edit : ooops DoD game starts at 8.30.

Don't know if it's possible but perhaps tweak your modem? I heard there was also something for cabel modems but considering my low ping allready I aint bothered to look.

I think a lot of it is down to isp, don't laugh, but when i first got isdn I was on aol, and i was lucky to get a ping below 130 to cs servers. Then I switched to BT openwound and the pings got down to around the 80 mark. Then when BT went mental and only let you connect for 4 hours a day for your 15 quid, I moved to clara.net where I pay 25 quid a month for an expected useage of 12 hours a day, and that's with whom I get the lowest pings so far.

It seems to me that any isp for which you need to use a cd to connect, or even downloading little connection utils seems to be a bit pants. With clara for instance, you just bung their phone number into the dial up networking jobbie and you're away, (after registering online obviously).

You could test this theory by using a company like freewire, (I'm sure you can google, I don't want to overdo the pimping in this thread). I've used them before when I am between providors, and you don't even register for them, you just get the phone number off their webbeh and put in anything as a username and password and away you go. Completely no frills, and if I remember gave pretty good pings, and a good way to test the basic provider over the full of useless shite provider theory.

I guess they may have run CS servers Mal, no idea though.

I have done no tweaking at all, and my isdn network adaptor is the cheapest one you can buy i think, not the expensive one BT try and sell you when you get your isdn.

Hope you managed to struggle through that long post. If you need any more help vokey, and have irc, pop into #clangreen I'm virtually always in there, or just post on here again :)

Clara net = teh win :D

Been with them since I got ISDN (as has a friend of mine). Always have a stable ping of around 100 to our clan server in Germany, the only problems I have had are with BF, but I blame the engine.

My advice - clare.net :D

I only pay £15 a month, as I am never online more than 4hrs a day (on average)

:D

Dunno why, but medal of honour is bloody aweful on isdn. I had it too, "slow server" symbols coming up all the time, regardless of what settings i chose.
Now I have broadband it works perfectly, its a total turnaround. I would genuinely suggest you chose another game, as isdn I always found pretty acceptable for everything except MoH.

Yep, xp2000+ , gf4 4400, 512 ddr isdn, it was mostly bloody crap.
But play cs or dod or q3 or well, anything else, and its fine.
Quite wierd, but my answer in the end was i just didnt play the game online.

I used 0800Dial when on ISDN, pinged 60/70 to most decent servers.
Connecting at 128k is absolutely pointless, 64k is as good and half the cost, you need speed not bandwidth. I only ever used 128 if I needed a file in a hurry. BT are touting a new Midband offering, its essentially 128k ISDN and £35 a month with D/L restrictions and 2 hour cutoffs, and therefore shite.

Thats BT for you!
I tried their ISDN unmetered offering once, for 2 days, and cancelled it.

How much is ISDN today then all together? is it worth the money yet? cos im sick of 56k :(

don't think isdn is really worth buying into now, if you can get cable or dsl.

If you cant get broadband then ISDN is totally worth getting. Some people seem blinded by this nowadays :/
Its the difference between a sports car and a morris minor when playing games.
I always used BT anytime (150 hours a month, anytime my arse!) which cost £15.99, and my avarage phone, including all home highway (ie isdn) charges was about £35 per month. Not too dear really.

Half-Life is playable with 100 ping, but Quake 3 isn't.

I played it with isdn ping ever since it came out, ie 50 to 125 ping depending on servers etc, and while its not as good as at a solid 28 ping like I get now according to 3wave, it was still very playable, and I beat lots of people.
To say its unplayable is a bit daft really, no offence.
Maybe its a long time since you had isdn ?

ISDN with a decent ISP is indeed fine for gaming.
