I'm going to be nerdy and say yes, it was 1987.. but you're mildly incorrect.. "hurricane" is a term used to describe things that develop in the sea somewhere and head west towards american blah blah blah im not really a nerd, but have a look up... basically the term "hurricane" means that such a thing could never exist in england...

we just had some really strong winds or something

Strictly speaking, hurricanes do not occur over the British Isles. However, we are sometimes affected by deep depressions that are the remnants of hurricanes. The most widely publicised such depression occurred on 16 October 1987. Although some gusts were as strong as a hurricane, the average wind speed was only sufficient to classify the storm as a severe gale. Weather forecasters underestimated the strength of the wind because of a lack of weather-reporting ships in the area at the time.

hey american person. :D

I have a friend from louisiana(feck the spelling) just outside new orleans which I'm told is fairly prone to hurricanes. She seems fairly un-enthusiatic about them (as in it doesn't envoke much of a reaction) which puzzles the hell out of me. Having my house ripped apart would piss me right off no matter how many times it happens. As for insurance I'd second td's piece of advice but qualify it with a 'insurance people are bastards' and would have written something into the contract you signed.
