Just wanting a second or third opinion

It's my wife's ex and he rates himself as a photog

I don't think he is all that great but I might be bias so just linking to some shots he put up. He post processes before he puts them up.

Opinions from the photoset welcomed

There's another set below this that I wanted to post as an example but lj isn't playing ball ATM so if you get a time out try again later cheers for feedback.

Don't think they're particularly well-composed shots and the colours seem pretty washed out. On an unrelated note, she's a pretty girl and the piercing is doing her no favours at all.

I don't think he tried very hard with the lighting, unless that was an effect he was going for.

He...i mean....the evil villain from any western circa 1950...said it himself; "Makes taking photos like these easy with a model like her in front of the lens. She's a sweet young woman"

First off, EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW, creepy man. Second, yes, no one cares about the photos and just looks at her, even if she's average + herself :p

Nothing special to see, would need to see mroe to actually judge the guy. He's a douche no matter what, i know from seeing a lot of douches in my time :D

He's doing free fetish shoots for young dumb girls, seems like a real winner.

Terrible photos. A NSFW tag on the photos would have been nice, too.

Really poor from that photo set. Looks like a low budget soft core porn shoot.

It's more the basics of lighting and focus that he struggles with that concern me.

As a photographer you can learn to direct better, but there's no hope for you if you can't even see that your subject is lit appallingly.

Nothing as revealing as the previous set, but in corsets and such.

didnt think the others were nsfw as nothing was 'showing' sorry about that

Total shit.

It doesn't mean much to call yourself a photographer these days, there seems to be a somewhat natural progression from "buy a DSLR" to "get an interest in photography" to "dammit, people owe me a living for this because my family told me my pictures rock". There is no regulation to it, anyone can start up their own photography company and fleece unwary customers. Mind you, if people are willing to pay and take their chances then more the fool them.

Sometimes I wish I wasn't an ethical human and could just happily rip people off for a living.

I'd be much better off but I just can't bring myself to do stuff like that. One of the many reasons I'm not cut out for 'business' or 'sales' :)

I'm no photo expert, but I reckon I could take photos of equal quality on my phone using no more technique than "point & tap". TBH I've seen better shots on the streets of Peckham.

his posing and lighting just looks a bit "off". Dont know what effect he was going for really, because they dont look natural or anything pose wise.

But more importantly, would you tap it?

It looks like the flash is direct flash. As Cal said his lighting setup needs a lot of work (plus she's a shit model).

These are good (in a bad way).

http://jj-maccrimmon.livejournal.com/812746.html

General bollocks, cooked highlights, lack of any creative effort. He has literally walked up to a run down house and taken snaps like any tourist could. The first comment says "Wow, what a set" - and that's the problem right there; personally I think people need to be told when they're crap before they get a false sense of self importance.

I think it might be a step too far regulating photography, unless maybe someone dies of shock at the poor quality of the images

Of course it's a step too far, I just dislike how photography as an art form has been badly cheapened by inexperienced wannabes (mostly in the wedding photography sector).

I have no issues with crap photography per sé, a lot of my photos are crap. I have a lot of respect for photographers that invest the work, time, passion and equipment to creating great work. If they make a living from that great work, then all the better. My beef is with those that enter the market with the sole aim to take money from people with sub-standard work. It's taking business away from those that do a good job (yes Tom, boo hoo to them :) ) and creating a bad reputation for the whole industry as a result. I'd hate wedding photographers to be up there with Lawyers and Bankers.
