Yes.

Although. I got pure shite in my GCSE's, really shite aswell. Between D's and U's (2 U's and a G) which i'm not proud of but i'm doing all right for myself, maybe i landed lucky but i'm not in a dead end job earning 3.50 an hour.

My take on it is this. Employers couldnt give a shit what GCSEs you got. As long as you get enough to get you into doing A Levels then you are fine (is it still 4 C's?). Obviously A Levels are more important, as the grades you get, get you into better unis, but GCSEs, I wouldnt panic about at all.

English University Admissions do not usually take GCSEs into account unless you do not have A levels and enter via another route (or in exceptional cases where you had some sort of personal problem during the A levels). Most still stipulate GCSE English and Maths though regardless of your A level subjects.

this is basically true, all colleges, job applications etc... only tend to look at your latest set of qualifications, i.e. if you hvae A levels then gcse's don't matter, if you hvae a degree then a levels dont matter.

obviously the exception is when they are specifically looking for a certain discipline, i.e. going for an accountancy job with a degree in philosophy and an a level maths

personally i did quite well at GCSE & A-Level (GCSE's 3 A's 7 B-C, A Levels 1 A, 2Bs 2 Ds) but then i horrendously screwed up uni :)

GCSE's don't matter (except possibly Maths and English), as far as employment goes. But do help you get into a better college/secondary school

your grade system confuses me, but I guess the swedish grade system wouldn't make alot sence to you either.

Thing is tho, if you have to work your ass of to be able to get good enough grades to get into something, is it worth it? I mean, if you ain't smart enough to start with, it gonna be hell if you manage to just get in after cramming your ass off on everything. Maybe do something that suits you better like picking up trash or something like that?

assuming you're going on to do Alevels, thats plenty good enough.
What matters is, depending on your course, you get the grades the uni you want to go to asks for.

if you can get the grades by working your ass off then your obviously bright enough to do the job you are working for :s
why would you settle for a lesser job when you can do better?

Lad I know worked his ass off and got bad school grades. Went from job to job before going back to college. Worked his socks off, stuck at it and is now a partner in a firm of solicitors earning £200k per annum. Im of the belief that if you work hard enough you can achieve whatever you like

Once you've got onto your A-level courses, GCSEs don't mean shit. I got 6As and 6A*s at GCSE, and then I did shite in my A-levels and only just got a IIii in my degree :p

Obviously I put by GCSE results but not my A-level results on my CV :p

all you need (for most things) is A-C in maths and english, and then whatever you need to get into college, its your A-levels that really count cos you need the points to get into uni :p

All that matters eventually is : What uni you went to. How good the uni is for that degree. What degree level you acheived. What other experiences you have (employer will always pick a cv with ok grades + lots of proof of holding places of responsibility vs excellent grades).

Thats what gets you the initial interview, from then its how much research youve done/ how quickly you can think on your feet. And also how good at verbal/number reasoning you are if they put you through an assessment centre.

Stick it out , but dont neglect doing other things like being society executives/ organising worthwhile events purely for grades... thats the dumbest mistake you can make.

agreed that gcses are not usually taken into account, its mainly A levels and any other qualifications upward from that. Still no reason to slack at it :) keep trying as it will be worth it in the end giving you better knowlege to carry on to whatever you do next. Plus its a good peen booster :D

keep it up!

Another thing you should do is CV build what you're young and have lots of time.
Want to be a lawyer, get some unpaid week or two long work experience at your local firm.
Want to by a Dr get a job in reception at your local surgery 1 night a week, or even local pharmacy.
When you come to apply for a specific job, its far easier if you've got these little bits of work experience so you can say "yep, i have decent grades, but what really makes me want to work in this area is the fact that i've done experience here, and here, and here, and gained a lot of knowledge and hands on experience about this profession and as a result i did xyz degree course and found that really exciting, and now I want to do this.

I was lucky and had done some stuff like that, but a lot of my friends did nothing and now are really struggling when applying for jobs etc because employers see theyr good grades, and then say "so how do you know you want to do this job" and they're like, err. because they cant say "well i did all the work experience dumbass"

Personal Statment that is solid and full of stuff that is relevant to the course also helps. I was in the lucky bastards catergory of education. Shit GCSES, Shit A-levels, Got to the uni i wanted to.. Without any real effort on my part other than doing stuff that interested me and was relevant to my course (Part-time Bereavement counselloring, Good job - (showing commitment and trustworthiness))

Now im at my first choice uni and getting 2-1's to firsts.

Guess i just needed to grow up and realise i need to work for what i wanted.

Above all what really matters above results is how you sell your self on your covering letter on you application. They wont give a guy from oxford a job over someone with a degree from somewere else, if his covering letter is shit.

Grades only tell them so much..

If he wanted to get into Cambridge he would need all A+ at GCSE though? In some cases they matter.

GCSE's are pretty null and void once your into A-levels. For oxbridge you generally need 4 predicted A's minimum at a-level, with that prediction backed up by your as-level results.

Secondly your ucas covering letter needs to be very good, similar to what tilda was saying about proving why you want to do that specific course (thought obviously when your 17/18 they dont expect as much).

Thirdly you need to do well in the interview, lots of schools offer special preparation classes/ mock interviews for this.

Finally , alot of luck... you can be an extremely clever well-rounded student but at the end of the day, theres always likely to be candidates better/more suitably qualified than you (especially when applying for oxbridge!)

oh and tris.. GCSE's do matter to a certain extent if you have no higher qualifications. A candidate with good GCSE's has written proof they can apply themselves to various subjects and can either a. work hard or are b. naturually intelligent (dubious considering gcse difficulty :p )
