I stopped wondering why football fans get bad press a long time ago. All the stereotypes are true. Millwall fans are total ****s when they go to away matches, randomly attack property (cars mainly) near Selhurst Park. One more example of English lout behaviour, and yet we still get all defensive whenever another country accuses our fans of being hooligans.

I think it's another case of the minority making it worse for the majority. Ch3tan is right - there are hooligans, but it is these few that give the rest of us bad press. If they grew up and stopped acting like a bunch of 15 year olds, we wouldn't have this problem.

Fuck me! Someone on here who actually agrees with me about football hooliganism, it's only taken years and years of fighting the cause. And you're from Bristol. I hope you're not a City fan, otherwise I may have to put you on ignore
However, on the subject - quite right. It's totally a case of the minority against the majority, whereas the general perception of the ill-informed public who only hear about football fans in the press when there is trouble assume that all football fans are scum. Which is highly irritating.

I dont think all football fans are hooligans, but the minority that are, are not stopped, rather they are for the most accepted.

How are they accepted? I think you'll find the majority of 'normal' football fans find them completely abhorrent and the rest are apathetic.
Hooliganism and racism needs to be stamped out, but it's not just a question of flicking a switch.

I remember that time we played City at Ashton Gate.... 1-1 at the end of the match. The stupid arsehole city fans couldn't take a draw, so they ran onto the pitch and started kicking our players. Bottles and other missiles were thrown at where we were all sitting.

FA needs to step up its watching of fans activites and promote teams to ban holligans/rascists and rather than just offering fines for not stamping it out offer incentives for teams with good records.

Clubs do ban fans, but as the majority of fighting is pre-planned and away from the ground there is little the clubs can do.

I remember seeing a TV prog about hooligans - the sophistication and the organisation they had was quite amazing. They used mobile phones and the internet to organise these fights. Even speaking to the people who they were about to fight over the phone, which always astounds me 'yeah, okay, we're by X at the mo, we'll meet you by Y'.
They are the minority, you only have to look at the crowd in most football games to see they are made up of kids, families, fathers and sons - these aren't gonna fight.
But, like in most cases, its the minority that spoil it for the majority.
