Unless the uni it people are totally clueless no chance at all, even if you could and did it`s dead easy for them to see the logs, track you down and take you out gansta stylee.

Yes.

Although be aware that you will probably be thrown out of your uni for doing so.

You could of course go to a decent uni which doesn't restrict it's students... I know we don't.

He's from Blackburn, so he can't afford a decent one. Has to settle with something like Teeside !

think that pretty much sums it up, if you try bypass the system and are caught they will kick you out

I had that problem at Aberystwyth until I found that the clever people administrating the system set up a system where I could open ports in the firewall for things like Daoc. Maybe there's something similar at your uni?

WTF.
english you goto teesside uni?!

and laddey teesside is a leet uni. has the best forensic science facilities of any uni

and also "For the table, produced by The Guardian newspaper, placed Mechanical Engineering at Teesside in second place among the British universities teaching the subject in the UK. “We topped the country’s universities for graduate-level employability of our Mechanical Engineering graduates""

weve also just opened a whole floor for metrology (weights and measure science).

i asked a load of the IT asian geeks this when i went to uni a few years back and they told me they use to do it but someone started downloading from newsgroups and they caught him pretty quick and shut down that avenue

they routed ports through html or something, involved using a "tunnel" program

didnt mean much to me though so couldnt give ya the details :<

its pretty easy
, you download the software then run the tunnel program an run all the aplliaction from the software an it should work :)

you just have to pay for a proxyserver for it to work ofc :)

ssh tunnel(s) solves a lot of such "problems" easy, but you need a server outside the uni network. as added bonus they won't see content of the traffic, but it isn't rocket science to make an educated guess tho ;)

If its blocked... and you bypass it youll get in the shit regardless of how you do it. Best advice is to politely ask them why its blocked and if they have a process to request unblocking.

If we find someone at work bypassing out stuff we go ape on them :) but if someone asks for something we normally try to help them out.

You'll need a tunnel of some sorts, which means you'll also need a remote computer for the other side of the tunnel which is less restrictive.

Ports which might be accessible include port 443 (for HTTP/SSL), as these connections have to be let through directly or proxied without modification (otherwise SSL will break). Maybe port 22 (SSH) incase your network admins use it for other things.

In the worst case you might have to use a tunnel over DNS or ICMP like this. However this is not exactly trivial to setup!

I'd love for someone to try that at the uni where i work, if only to see their faces as our networks team decend on them wielding baseball bats due to them running an unorthorised DNS server. Again i don't know how the other unis are run, but any unusual traffic is flagged up at work and rest assured most of what goes on is known about and dealt with.

Well you can probably easily route your taraffic throug a certain port at your uni (as explained).

but remember, that you can use ssl or wtf its called to connect to either usenetserver or giganews (which i guess youre using.). which makes content of traffic invisible to them -> ask if i use traffic illegaly? no i dont... You are not able to know the ligimaticy (spspsp?=?????) even :p:p:p

Here's an alternative - 3 wireless Internet.

There are bandwidth limits, you'll probably have a rather poor latency, but the chances are it won't be firewalled so strictly. I don't actually know the full details on how good the connection is, but it is a potential option.

I'd only use this as a last resort for things like IRC access and other small bandwidth applications.

what you have to do is dig a tunnel underneath the students union building and drill up into the bar area and nick a load of alcohol. Won't get round the firewall, but more fun
