Is there actually anything left to play?

And another thing. Communities have gone out of the window. I remember playing RA2, every night you'd come on to the server to the same old crowd of probably ~40-50 people that you'd know, always talk with etc. Now I never see the same person twice, and to see someone I know from IRC playing anything is a rarity.

Another thing that pisses me off is clan tags.
"Hi I'm [TRH]-=ESF=-"FED"-[name](BG)]=fe]["
Can't people belong to one fucking clan any more?

The 'mature' people have gone from the scene ... where do these people reside? I long to play a game where I can have a decent conversation with people, rather than people with euroshit =) smileys bound to F that get said after everytime they fucking whore you with the lightning gun/headshot you with deagle.

It's no wonder you don't bump into the same people often if you rarely play a game for more than 45 mins. I dare say there are some lesser-played games (eg the RA mods as opposed to TFC or CS) where a sense of community exists.

We're at a stage, aren't we, where Q2 and the like are old. People have played them for years (maybe) and naturally stopped playing them. Nobody wants to play the same game forever.

CS is the mass-market online game and so naturally companies see there's money in that type. Hence RtCW, MOHAA and the other 'realistic games'.

UT2003 is just round the corner which may help bring back some fun, but the days of fan-created mods are seriously numbered. Who was it who said that Q3 was too complicated an engine to mod quickly and that the next generation would require dedicated teams of full-yime staff to mod? I dunno. Matter of opinion. Maybe. Whatever.

Nighty, this also sounds like harking back to a non-existant 'Golden Era'. I dare say there are many people who think the online scene these days is great. I harken back only a few months to when the BW forum peeps played UT together. What's my point? You may well ask...

Feel free to rearrenge this post into whatever logical order you see fit.

Nah that's bull m8 :)

I play CPMRA most nights (ping permitting), and I play against the same groups of people night in night out. And they're usually the same people that play in the BWCPMRAL which I co-incidentally run, which itself has a nice sense of community to a degree.

Ditto it's close cousin RA3, although it's largely plagued by wankers these days.

The CTF pickup channel #ctfpickup.euro has garnered quite a following as well, and I play quite a few games per week in there too, again with & against the same people usually.

It all depends on where you look for this "community" imo.

isn't it a QW physics mod?

Back to the "golden era" of online gaming, myself and a few friends have had this discussion recently. I personally think the way any idiot can get a PC, get online, get a copy of xxx game or whatever and get on servers instantly has given rise to a new "subculture" - the gaming retards.

For example, i'm a rtcwnation newsy/columnist (is that a plug if it's a BW site?) - and being in one of the 'top' uk clans in my first "proper"endeavour into online games since I stopped playing qw/q2 in mid 2000, some of the rubbish these people come out with is fucking disturbing - There's recently been a debate on config editing, where this subculture argue that config editing is cheating, whilst reason dictates that if the developers intended such settings to be changed, it's not cheating or whatever. They can't comprehend this, or the fact that it's been done since QW, thus waste lots of time and peoples bandwidth argueing their stupid cause.

Great what online gaming's become, heh?

Although I think it's great more and more people can become involved in online gaming, the high percentage of idiots amongst the 'newbies' are beyond annoying.

Well CageCunt, I'm anti config h4xing in some ways. In certain games there are some config commands which can give such a big advantage over others who dont use it, wether or not the developer made the game configurable, doesnt mean that should be abused.

After all, gaming is sposed to be pretty level playing fields, so you the person make the difference, not your config, or a little script...

The communities are ever changing, I mean there are many many new people joining online gaming communities now. Constant influx of "newbs".

I've recently been playing CS about 3hours a day for the past few days, and I've allready started to see the same people regularly every day, they arent exactly great people to chat to, but we say hi and such.... One of the things that prevents you from seeing people regularly (especially in cs) is the aliases they use. Every "good" player in CS pretty much plays with a multitude of alternate names, and changes those regularly too, I'm rather sure all games suffer from this, bar Tribes2 perhaps, due to the way you logon to play with a set name etc.

Gaming getting more competetive could be a reason as to why there are a lot of whingy bastards out there, and why there are so many willing to cheat in every little way (configs, external progs etc.). I think we are getting lots more whingy bastards partly because everyone knows the games we play so well, everyone knows every last bit about every map and every place on that map. Everyone knows the limits of the game engines, when games reach that stage its usually time to put them down, its the point where games become much less fun. This is especially true in mmorpgs. When I first started UO, I was in awe at the size of it, and really scared of going anywhere due to monsters and such. I had goals and ambitions in it and played it religiously for bloody ages, but eventually I started learning "too" much about it, I started to get around faster and only kill things that gave maximum money etc. Since then it just got less and less fun until I stopped playing...

That last paragraph is a bit random I think but I cba to reread it... enjoy! :p

I sort of aggree. Gaming comunities have become scarce, on pubs at least.

My own gaming peak was this time last year, playing CS on nguk. There was a solid community, especially on one paticular server, #14 i think. Gaming has been growing spectacualry quickly for along time now, but it's only been the past 6months where it's grown too large. HL Is the worst face of gaming imo, with far too many newbies and llamas. I can't actually keep a server list for HL, as loading the 15,000 odd servers onto the screen takes too long.

Q3 Does seem to have the best communities compared with the other big games, but that's proberbly because nobody plays it :( Q3F Was doing great till beta2 came out :(

Dammit, Meg I've never hated GD. Been playing JK2 a lot recently and always on GD servers, simply because they have the most saber-only FFA servers and they're good too. What's my point? Prolly something about community, I dunno.

Reading that thing about config altering just made me think of another thing. Since q2 days I've always used FOV 120 ... this carried through to Q3 where I used the same thing. The only problem is, whenever I play an iD engined game (bar MOH) it feels like I need to use FOV120 :( I noticed this when I installed RTCW the other night (decent game btw) but it just feels 'wrong' due to the FOV's I've used for the past 4 years :)

I use FOV 120 in any quake game, simply because its the daddy :)

So, scripts are wrong in CS, but changing your FOV to 120 is ok?

I used to use 120 in Q2 just to get a decent sense of speed from the game as it was pretty ponderous.

Switched down to 110 in Q3 though, but for single player games using the Quake.X engines I use a fov of 110 as well, bar MOH too for some reason.

Editing your config is not cheating, and anyone that thinks otherwise is a complete retard.

I'm very much against cheating in online games (Hell I should be I'm a League runner after all), and I wrote a Q3 config maker (link in sig) which allows people to have a custom q3 config written for them to suit.

As for CPMA, it started life as an attempt to appease the QW-ers by emulating the QW physics (air control and such), but as time has gone on it's become more than that and has become a fully featured mod in it's own right, very much akin to OSP - to such a degree that both mods now share code & features between them.

I have completely gone off FPS's at the mo, they are all the same crap. A couple of months ago I'd have been drooling at the prospect of a new SoF (played the first few 5/6 times and loved it)and JKII - I havent even bothered to complete the first JKII 'level', or even install SoF2. Even Medal of Honour couldnt keep my attention for longer than an evening, and I got bored of RTCW about half way in. Utter boring repetitive shite.

In the past you'd just have to name an FPS and I'd have completed it a few times or spend hours online, now I cant even be arsed to take a peek at the intro.......

Games playing at the mo: GTA3 (oh how I love sniping from the top of the casino and blowing up helicopters), Final Fantasy VII (ok, so I never played it), Deus Ex (for the 15th time, not kidding), Dungeon Seige, DAoC (now and again), and not forgetting Morrowind (fantastic, besides stupid bugs). To think I used to loathe RPG's.....

Anyone got any suggestions of any good/future titles before I abandon the FPS completely?
