lol, I could have swore the pixies were more grunge tbh.

In as much as Curbain wanted to sound like the Pixies then Yes :)

Although that said the Pixies wanted to be Husker Du and it all filters backwards ad infinitum.

Just like the Indie being "New music" comment.

Hate to break it to you but they were actually fucking huge before he killed himelf.
Nirvana had one huge album before he shot himself, that was nevermind which sold 20 million in 91. They didnt even get above 15 mil after that, so no they werent huge.. they had one huge record, thats it. they were a successful band for the time, but were on the decline. If he didnt kill himself i reckon thye probably would have got 1 maybe 2 at a push more succesful albums out

A lot of people would argue that that is huge... and their total worldwide album sales stands at approx 82.5 million albums, which certainly isn't small.

there were at one point the biggest band in the world, I'd personally say post GnR they were the biggest band in the world in terms of exposure and zeitgeist.

You clealry were not around at the time If your only argument is quoting record sales (not small numbers at that), and btw I would say In Utero was pretty Big, if not As Big, then it did have a bit more of a censorship issue to deal with.

BTW what do you base your career specualtion on? what exactly do you know to say what could possibly happen during the next 40 or so years of his possible life? If your going to quote record sales in that last year befor he died at me don't waste your time cos that aint much to speculate the next 40 years on is it.

Sales are the only unbiased measure of a bands success, and if your whole argument is "you werent there at the time", then you have no argument at all

i see its pointless having a logical discussion with you, just read over your paragraph when you have your brain engaged and the fanboi is off.
Then ask yourself how businesses work out projections for the coming years, ofc there are other factors but the bottom line for record businesses is how many units they sell

Yep, and alot of it is re-releases i had a link from a discussion on another forum but cant find it atm, so i cant really use this as a argument.

You are correct, they have the highest GnR of a band where someone died and it broke up which is my priniciple point, Cobain killing himself plays no small part to their media exposure. At the time Michael Jackson was the top of the pile, ecplipsing their sales.
As for being the zeitgeist at the time, i would say the Pixies (essentially who Nirvana were moulded around) were the far more influencial. Cobain (imo) being the better for writing catchy songs (which is probably why they sold so many records main stream, but im speculating), but Frank black imo was the more talented so the title of the band which was more influencial on the spirt of things at the time would be the Pixies in my opinion

The pixies were influential, but they were always an underground band. They weren't big in any way shape or form. In terms of the Grunge movement though Nirvana were the ones who broke it through into the mainstream. I still remember the impact Smells Liek Teen Spirit had on the public and tv/radio. It produced a huge exposure for what was a small, pretty provincial scene. Cobain's death did sell more records, athough that was probably more increasing the Bleach sales rather than mevermind In Utero or Unplugged.

But i do dispute the fact you don't think they were huge, they were at the time and maintained the exposure for a few years. However, if cobain had lived i suspect they woudn't ahve sold that many more records, mainly because i suspect he would have done a Peter Green/Syd Barrett and become a recluse and painted rather than make music.

Unbiased maybe, Inaccurate defiantly and also it's incredibly convenient for you.

Says the guy who states one of the biggest most influential bands of their time was not THAT Great or THAT big, yeah right, and I am not a fanboi either, nice weak assumption with some even weaker put downs to boot. Is this the point that you expect me to give you credit for anything you say?

I don't have to like someone’s music or be a fan to appreciate what they do and the impact of it, I don't subscribe to the "I don't like them so they must be shit" mentality, like a lot of "Music Fans" wannabe "Critics".

Then ask yourself how businesses work out projections for the coming years

Please post all the info that you had to hand when you made your "Projections" or does I Reckon mean you read it somewhere?

lol anyone who was around during Nirvana's heyday will know just how massive they were, and as someone has already said, the biggest band to follow GnR.

To some people Cobain was a genius. I think he was a very talented song writer, who just couldnt handle the fame. At the time of his death he was probably one of the most, if not the most famous person in the world.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree, to clarify i consider the likes of Led Zepplin, Beetles etc.. as huge because they had more than one album over the 15 mil mark meaning they have truley penetrated the market because it means they are consitently making hits.

Michael Jackson was the most famous music artist at the time afaik

Well, Nirvana had 3 albums selling over 15 million. Zepplin only had 4 selling over 15, although IV sold over 30 million. The Beatles had 6, two of which were compilation albums.

By that reconing they were more successful than bands like Queen and Guns and Roses.

nirvana are stupidly overated, they were never THAT good..

i used to think that as well, but i've started to really enjoy their music

as for indie music, as mentioned - i never knew it was something that was a craze, or ever has been :(

It is now because all the wankers who thought it was "cool" to slag off the nu-metal and other guitar driven music in the years 1998-2003 now are jumping on the band wagon and worshipping new bands that are crap :p

I blame Busted and McFly and Avril Lavigne, they fed bubblegum pop mixed with 3 chord wonders to sell to the masses. Since those fans have now grown up, they look for the catchy tunes and 3 chords!
