Is Quake 3 Dying?

I've just read this comment on another Mess board:

"Quake III is dying now , all the top clans are folding , like Cicatrix , nEo's TDM , Guild ..... everyone has lost interest in the game. Although i think q3 will live long the arenas will be populated by newbies for eternity."

Personally I've been playing less because of problems in our clan, but it certainly seems to me that the community isn't as big as Q2 was at this sort of age.

Maybe people's birds are getting their way and 18 months of whinging has players hanging up their railz to spend their evenings cuddled up infront of Eastenders. On the other hand, if these peeps are going to play other games....what games?

I'm kinda open to suggestions on what games have decent communities - and might be attracting people away from Q3. By this I mean Deathmatch so noone mention that stinking POS cnut0rstrike.

It is true that TDM is suffering a bit, more i think due to some clans who have been struggling for a while coming to the end of their tether during the holiday period than a deep hate for the game.

For example, look at our Q3CTF League. 3 Weeks in, all 74 clans still participating, plenty more on the waiting list. I could have filled all the spaces in the Q3TDM League more or less with clans from the waiting list, but due to a shortage of admins i decided not to. I have approaching 40 clans on the waiting list for next season, in addition to around 130 clans still playing in the league.

Tribes2 was the game that lured me away from Quake3 and Team Fortress (Quake1). Can be a steep learning curve though which puts many players off =(

lol yes newbie players spamming rockets / plasma all over the place, err like but thats what we all do but with aim roflol !.

As for q3 dying, well the reduction in numbers of playing,
(if that is true) could be due to a few things ( ferking loads of points releases so u will never see anybody playing on another version of q3 / loads of new games that can be played online / pinging then joining servers full of bots this fucks me off / best one, newbies getting raped in 2 mins and never playing q3 on line again / feeling you have to fuck with your config as all the players better than you do / add others u think of here.....)

err thinking about it, i will come back later when i know why i am typing.

sorry just more questions.

but if bif says loads of clans have signed up then loads of clans have signed up.

we only live in the q3 version that we have installed

oi and 56 k modems suck

I briefly jumped across to q3a from q2 for a short while, wasn't that impressed and dropped back to q2 again, q3a does seem to be going the same direction q2 went a while back. I personally think it will keep a certain amount of dedicated followers and everyone else will go elsewhere, saying that, q2 still has packed uk/euro servers every day, leagues etc, i wouldnt get too concerned, just means the rubbish players will get filtered off :p

btw what is everyone playing now?! cs still? i cant see Doom 3 taking off due to rediculous cpu requirements :upyours:

if u check the gamespy stats by far the most popular game is c.s.
i truly have no idea why tho!
i been waiting for 18 months for q3a to eclipse q2, but imo it never has.ok there are more servers (gamespy again!)but they allways seem to be empty.ive certainly never found a server that was as busy as say, bw dm1 .(ctf servers excepted).perhaps that jolt ffa server in hindsight , but that always plays the tiny maps where its more luck than anything whether u hit anyone lol.
the bw osp servers are lovely and smooth, i always get good pings.but never anyone there!if anyone knows of busy servers let me know!

Back in the day you took a good kicking, and then came back for more. In this day and age it's far more likely you just slide off to play some (cough) team game like tribes 2 or cs, because they can stand in one spot and play the game in a way that makes them happy. Imho it's gona the see the end of the elites era, people just don't like getting kicked around these days, and don't get the hammerings that makes them a step better than your average to good player. I only play tfc these days in my old age, but im still a step up from the better of the tfc crop of players. The amount of times i get acused by them of cheating is a testiment to what getting kicked around for 8 months playing quake on the old minos, then becoming the kicker myself is all about.

ur right kurt.ppl dont stay on a server if they get beat . they just go somewhere/play somewhere else.
in q2 u get the same ppl coming back night after night whether they are good or not.i still play q2.sometimes i win , sometimes i dont.
i can handle that lol

QuakeIII isn't dying. It's just lacking a little in the community spirit. Some players come to the "game" and take it too seriously. Others don't take it seriously enough.

What is needed is a little organisation perhaps. A server and a forum to hang-out and build up the sense of "fun" associated with quakeIII again. If a "regular event" were organised, above and beyond clan ties; above and beyond the chest-beating of the elite, then the sense of "fun" might return again?

Any suggestions?

thats just what i said about five posts ago.there doesn't even seem to be a server ppl go on regularly except for the jolt one with the silly maps.not even one!

"What is needed is a little organisation perhaps. " yes and no, if you have to organ-eyes it, then it not happening. yes but something organized would be good - barrysworld mega game

as for the fun bit , i think it's still about, atm the only place i can play online is from work first thing in the morning well before 08:00-aliased nosound@work.ac.uk- thus i am having to play on north american ffa servers, it's good fun all the player have skills and most talk just enough so you know your not playing a bot ie. ta , :) , lol , shot , :p blah blah and nobody gets upset, in fact ppl say hello when joining a server and also say cya before leaving yes i know u can get that on eu servers but that's normally after 12:00 o'clock at night ?.

Anyone interested in playing the game in the spirit it was intended feel free to private message me, or join (say):-

BarrysWorld - FFA (1) (213.221.174.4:27961)

I agree with venturer01, that it's *more* fun when ppl are polite; acknowledge good play or help out with connection advice, etc. etc. I'm usually about for an hour 0700-0800 most weekdays, if anyone can't find UK opponents.

If you would also like to contact me via ICQ #122432048 and we can arrange a friendly FFA, TDM or clan match.

We shouldn't be relying on Barrysworld to organise everything for us. Leagues are nice. But sometimes we have to get off our behinds and do stuff for ourselves.

There's far too many complete arseholes out there imo .... ppl who have been playing for a long time, are very good at the game and should know better. I see ppl making l33t35t comments every day and see people leave servers cos of the atmosphere.
Theres little or no teamplay on CTF publics and newbies are treated like scum from a lot of ppl. Publics were fun, but more often than not, it's crap now. I'm not surprised it's dying tbh.
The leagues are arguably even worse.

People could start by using their own names on servers instead of aliasing all the time and bring back some of the fun and the respect for other players. This 'Unnamed Player' rubbish is so boring now, please stop it!
I do beleive it's dying and it's the community, mostly those in the well established, more successful teams rather than the newbies already mentioned.

When the right game comes along, I wont hesitate.

I agree with most points you make there Ch@meleon. Your right about the sprit of it these days, there's very little of it:(. Both from the better players, and the wanabies with there elite crap they spout every other kill they get:p

Still there are a few good places to hang out. 3 years going and we still have the best teamplay, and most friendly people around on pubs, q2ctf no less:)

KS plays ----> devils' advocate <------- :-

Isnt it condescending to say the elitists are killing quakeIII?

To stand by and moan about the death of QuakeIII?

Has anyone who has made a post here, actually made a positive contribution to the community - other than posting their words of wisdom?

The king (QuakeIII) is dead? Long live the king! (QuakeIV?!)

If elitist bullsh*t and good players are ruining your day? Do something about it?

TBH Q3A never took off, well not in the way Q2. The first reason was Q3A isn't anything special. Q3A also suffered from a lack of mods at first and a very bad patch phase which meant mods didn't then work. It also had lots of competition, including Q2 which is still around even now.

How you can even consider Q3 to be dieing is beyond me.

"I have approaching 40 clans on the waiting list for next season, in addition to around 130 clans still playing in the league."

QW has 3 Top UK Clans (DN,4K,WR)
And maybe 10 or so inactive clans.

There arnt even any UK leagues. There is 1 euro league which is quite big ( www.challenge-smackdown.com ) which gets like 50 clans from all of europe competing.

Everytime it gets news or anything people think "omg qw is making a comeback" but it's just the same community it has been since q3 came out. I cant remember the last time I seen a newbie on a QW server. (Im still considered a qw newbie (skillwise)) compared to most and ive been playing about 2yrs.

It may be losing it's appeal to some people but it's the hardcore few that make it worth playing.

Stop worrying about q3 dieing fs.

I stopped playing q3 and moved onto CS because i didnt like the community. I played q2 for 2 and a half years and loved it and at its height (b4 the ukccl wasnt sponsered imo) the community was gr8 too. People seemed more friendly back then and more willing to help newbies. I started on WP and got to know some good players from COG and HOOD etc even though i was shite and i could learn off them. Also on the duel servers people would be willing to give each other tips and didnt alais all the time so you knew who you were playing. I actually got good at q2 duel at one point:)

I dont think q3 had any of this just people with attitude problems and aliases. But i think the major problem with q3 was the lack of people on servers and the lack of good maps. when i played it as my main game apart from clan commitments with EEK! which was good fun i only ever played CA on dm6:) I just couldnt get into anything else like q3 duel.

When EEK fell through i moved mainly onto CS because i knew i could always get a quick game anytime of the day because of the numbers that play it meaning i could easily get into the game. Even though i dont neccessarily think that it is a much better game than q3 or q2.

Personally I'd like to see more people playing Q3F. Its a great mod, best team game ever IMHO, and has a good community ( a few wankers as well of course but they're everywhere). Plus its still Q3 albeit in a slightly altered form (more depth for a start)

www.q3f.com

Give it a look :)

err i think not. i jumped on the q3 bus when it came out as did loads of ppl from qw. the q3 standard maps are just spot on, the extra Threewave CTF maps fixed ctf.

as for nobody playing lol

i have installed and play 1.27 g and h and 1.29 f and h but if you use gamespy or pingtool you will see ppl playing 1.17 and also loads of mods.

i play on local-host and do new stuff everyday, it was q3dm7 today,. a rj going backwards from the doorway onto the rl and also firing a rocket and killing a bot on the rl. will never use it at a Lan but ya never know. boo :p

Lack of good maps and too many maps is a good shout. There's nothing in quake 3 that matches some of the classics from q2, dm2/3 for instance. It was easy to sit in for rotation night after night with only 8 maps. While i did the whole 20 when quake 3 first came out from time to time, it soon wore off.
Too many crap maps, dm1-4 and the space maps:p I know there were servers running smaller rotations, but they hardly build communities do they:(
