Is music nowadays just crap?

Just a question, seeing as I seem to prefer songs from the late 90's until 2002 at the moment.

All the new shit just sounds the same, from bands that are usually followed by the prefix "The"

Nah, i think, came to me in a dream(of all places), that people just have a larger selection of things.

Same with games, if you million games come out a year, most of them must be a bit poor.

I think if you look at the good music that comes out today(as in album numbers for example) and compare it to good music that came out in 97 or 87, you'll see that the numbers are probably quite the same.

There's no less needles, just more hay

Mostly now for new bands there is noone to look to for inspiration. They have to try and create a new sound. Sadly mostly go for the quick cash in and re-churn old covers or replay the same cack week in and week out.

The 60's 70's 80's and 90's had their own unique style of music, 2000+ is still struggling with mediocre manufactured bands struggling to come up with something new other than their 1 hit wonder songs.

Heh, good music is still being made. It's just hard to come across because it's in between all the shit that covers the market.

its not getting crapper really.. but what we seeing is overhyping of so called good groups so they are brought to attention and then fade away much quicker as the industry moves on to another one.

doubt we'll see another group like say.. pet shop boys or erasure who still plug away and do some new tunes. the bands around atm have shelf life of 18 months tops, ad even then its own to what magazines like NME tend to think of them at the time.

if u ignore the hype and go by your gut feelings.. still some good stuff around.. for example:

just gotta avoid what the industry tells you is good and make your own mind up, its all out there, een moreso with youtube and other sites.. go explore

if you find music crap as a whole, then you either aren't looking hard enough or just don't like music. when you consider the HUUUUUUUGE amount of music that is constantly being released, then to say that music 'as a whole' is anything at all is ridiculous.

tbh aside from those two mika songs i dont think i know any modern stuff lol, occasionally i might catch top of the pops whilst channel surfing but i dont watch tv very much at all now so havent the foggiest who's number one.

caught a cracking show yesterday i think it was on one of the bbc digital channels The Eagles live in concert from the 70s or early 80s bloody brilliant stuff tbh.

The "old" music always seems better because the only stuff you hear from then was the stuff that was successful and people still want to listen to today.

It's the same reason that computer games seem crap these days compated to the old classics. It's because the only old computer games you remember are the good ones, not the thousands of crap ones that were released.

You just need to watch the right episodes of TOTP2 to realise that there was plenty of chaff produced back then as well! There's also the thing that you tend to like what you hear, which is why songs can grow on you. That means your much more likely to enjoy the style of songs you grew up listening to back then than new styles about today.

That said, music today really is craP!

One reason why "the older stuff sticks with you" is cos its been with you in informative / impressionistic / young years. You grow up with it

Eg. I distinctly remember how entranced I was when I first saw Kate Bush's Wuthering Height's video back in 1977 (or might be 1978) with her haunting vocals and diaphanous gowns. I'll always love that particular song.
