Is hypnotism real?

I'm the sceptic of all sceptics and have scoured the nets for more info,
but I can't work out if people actually fall under some mental state or it's
mass hysteria/self dillusion.

Anyone here been hypnotised, either on stage or for health reasons?

Even if it's simply a mass hsyteria/self delusion, it's real that people fall under it and someone makes it happen.

Hypnotism may not be as it's in movies, but the reality of hypnotism is that people fall under, people do recover memories and it is real in the form that it is.

So as such, hypnotism is real, but what actually happens isn't as it's "simply" described when talking of hypnotism.

I got hypnotised in magaluf once. You know, where he makes you do stupid things. I cant remember anything at all about it even though he made me strip naked etc so I have to say, in my experience it is real

I personally know people who were very heavy smokers, who stopped just like that after attending hypotherapy, and I also know people who used it to cure nervousness. Worked for them.

Would never let someone do it to me tho. I don't trust them, no matter how many letters they have after their name. You go to a cash point and find £9000 missing from your account lol

stage hypnotism is different from theraputic hypnosis. My sister is doing a course in theraputic hypnotism and its fascinating, it is just re-training the brain and opening up areas of the sub conscious that we don't usually pay attention to. It's nothing mystical just reprogramming.

Never been to one of these things, they happen at my uni a lot though (Weird 'xxx rated' one, kinda twatish) - Some say it's staged, some say it's not.. I don't really want to find out.

Without going into details, I've actually had this done in the past - Not the 'Stage' sort.

I think its very difficult to stand up and say "Yes it works" or "No it doesn't", on this sort of thing, it really will depend on you, I think.

In my opinion, it works up to a certain extent - a very large part of is it 'self delusion' as Sparx said, I think, but its not just that, its just very subtle, very hard to put your finger on exactly how its working, it just kinda 'does'.

Duks I think you are right, it won't work absolutely its not like with an operation where they can cut something out but they can identify a problem and help you tell yur brain to stop spazing out over things, but they are not councillers or medical doctors, when sis tells me about it its really interesting.

I read Derren Brown's book last year, it was incredibly dull. Long story short, despite hypnotising people all the time he doesn't believe in it, he just thinks there is a certain personality type that is suggestable under a certain amount of pressure and when in a certain frame of mind and when there are certain expectations of them.

I think it only works on suggestible people who are able to essentially clear their mind.
If you think about something else while they try and hypnotize you it wont work which is probably the same reason they don't try going into banks and saying hand over all the money

At bugjam 91, my m8 went to a tent with a hypnotist. He came back to our tents very annoyed - at the show, the hypnotist got the audience to count to 10. Only he forgot what came after 6 and no matter how much he tried, my m8 could not remember. Strange.
