Portsmouth is where i was born and come from.

I hate it with a passion.

Its full of townie f**k heads and if you so much as look at someone wrong they will bottle / fight you.

I know a lot of people who go there because they've chosen to stay in the area / with their parents. At least you are doing the decent thing and getting away from home, best thing you will ever do wherever you are to be honest. (well 90% of the time)

I wish you luck in whatever you are doing, just watch out for people with dots on their knuckles of teardrop tattoes.

I don't know. I barely remember the 80's. In fact, I don't even remember the 80's at all :)

Well, whether mullets were commonish in the early 90s or not, it doesn't change the fact that they're an 80s thing does it :)

Portsmouth Uni is getting better, it's got a nice new block and parts of the campus are getting face lifts. I know nothing about the Uni from an Educational pov, I just go past it a lot. Socially, depends on your scene. If you're prepared to venture into the historical parts there's some decent pubs (Eastney Tavern) and assorted restaurants of pleasure. But, if club and rub your tub is your scene there's only one real area, along the seafront.

*Generally* i'd say Portsmouth is getting better, having suffered real disinvestment from the decline of the Navy and Dockyard, of which were once the mainstay of the area. But, it does seem to moving on and there are good parts to it. Bit of a mix-match in some areas with a bit of a Jade't (Big Brother reference) lifestyle, in contrast to the IBM'rs and alike.

Personally, i'm not going to Portsmouth Uni because it's too close for comfort, i'm not overly keen on the city and its courses aren't particularly good offerings for me. I'd spend a day or two there before deciding if it's where you want to be for the next few years.
