gorbachioo is coming across as doing something intentionally and specifically to help these people. this is the only way he could criticise others about doing nothing.

otherwise hes just a ****.

if hes only using money he needs for essentials to live (food and water for him self. you dont need heat, just wear more clothes) and sending the rest to feed people, fair play. but i doubt hes doing that. he probably lives in a brick house, owns a car, he has a computer obviously. its clear hes living beyond the basic needs. therfore how can he complain about anyone else?

You might be right but atleast he got the thought... that is a start. As long as it does not stay with the thoughts only.:touch:

I called tohtori a prick because he talks about massive catastrophies as if they are nothing to worry about. "Just nature taking its course"

Ive never critizised anyone for not giving money to charity. I dont give money to charity. Ive critisized people for being ignorant. In a democracy things change when people talk about them and vote. Thats what i want people to do as private donations will never solve anything.

Oh and a.. that "living with nothing but essentials" thing was just stupid.

because hes right. its nothing to me, or him or any of us individually. it means jack shit to my self that an african is dieing every half a second.

why is it stupid? if you want to make a difference why dont you do something about it? donate 2/3 of your money every money and live on only what you need.

so if i get this right, your idea of helping these poor people is to call people idiots and pricks if they dont agree with you? im not sure its helping.

"Have to save all" mentality... Well if you're willing to let millions of people to die because you cant be bothered to do anything about it then....... ok!

I think i've said this before.. You're an ignorant prick. :kissit:

(ps. i think you should visit Africa some day.. it could be enlightening)

First off, troll elsewhere. But since you're here already, here's some cake:

The have to save all mentality will be the downfall of humanity, a fact if we can't prioritise. People will keep breeding, we will get more and more hunger around the world, and we can't, simply CAN'T save them all. If we can, i'd like to hear your solution to it.

It has nothing to do with "letting millions to die!", if i could, i'd feed all of them. I can't. And if i gave that kid a loaf of bread, why ain't i giving his sister. Or his family, and why am i suddenly singling out that family? Why not a village.

You do nothing towards helping, say, africa. Except vote(whoopie, like your vote counts for sh*t) and talk how others are bad for saying things differently then you think. Your 2/3s would save countless of lives, but why won't you give it away? Selfish, as many many others, and you give as much a f*ck about africa then me.

So, what IF i had this halleluja experience from your talk? Ok, let's save africa! I'll do what Gorb preaches and...do nothing. Givew nothing. Help in no way concrete at all. Now multiply that by a million people doing nothing and you get...

*drumroll*

...current situation.

In short, f*ck off hypocrite, atleast i don't hide behind a vail of preaching.

And for the record, like i said on another thread, you know sh*t all about what i do or don't.

I don't get a regular pay yet, but even with what i get from my job, i give loose change and sometimes more to people begging on the streets, just because i don't need the change. I've bought all my clothes for the past 10 years from charity shops(those that people take clothes to, and the profit goes to third world countries) and if anyone at all needs my help and i can, i'll give it if it doesn't difficult my life(ofcourse). Even if you asked for help, i'd not blink twice.

So you go, go and vote in your nike shoes and 200euro shades.

I don't like tooting the "horn of what i do", but sometimes i get enough of this "you bad".

If we dont start controlling breeding soon we will not be able to feed everyone. But that has nothing to do with the situation right now as we still are able to feed everyone. The question is, do we control the population explosion with famine and war or by restricting breeding.

You cant feed them all. We can. Thats what im trying to do. And the fact that some wont get help is hardly an excuse not to help the ones who would.

Voting is the only way one can make a change in this country. And as i said before, thats all im asking people to do: find out what needs to be done and then vote for it.

Voting and participating in the debates is the best way you can make a difference. If everyone donated to charity organizations then perhaps it would make a difference but they dont.

You dont hide behind a vail of preaching. I can clearly see what kind of an asshole you are.

Again, giving donations is very much respectable but it does not make up for being ignorant about the worlds problems. The world is the way it is because the average human being is ignorant and stupid. If we spent half of the time we read about celebrities reading about what should be done then these things would be solved.

When people want something politicians start wanting it and then things happen.

As has already been touched upon, we need to sort out our impending fuel crisis first. After all if we can't solve that then the food crisis, at least here in the UK, will be quite bad. In Europe, we have a metaphor called the 'Food Mountain', which is the amount of food wasted by each country. This waste repressents prosperity (that which we can afford to waste), and the state of the economy in general.

We can't gather it all up and give it away as to do so would require massive logistics and money to do so, much more than anyones willing to pay for a charitable act. Plus you'd have to keep on doing it, week after week, month after month, for decades, only to see little if any progress. Its not worth it.

Turning the excess into Bio Fuels seems the easier option, except of course, you then have the type of foods wasted that can be turned into fuels. You still have an excess that goes to waste, not to mention that you'd still have to grow more refinable foods to make any real impact on the fuel crisis.

As for 'Riots in Egypt' and 'The global price of Rice', well, thats life isn't it. There pissed at the price of rice, as they view it as a staple of their diets. Thing is, if they would learn to cutivate it themselves, use some of the advances of the last 50 years to reclaim some desert and use that for farming, then they'd have plenty.

Anyway, back to topic. A food crisis is coming, but right now it affects 'other countries' and therefore isn't here, right now. So until it does get here, we don't have to do anything about it. Thats how the politicians will deal with it.

One thing Gorbachio is right on - everyone in the modern world needs to be educated about the world more - as some of the comments on this forum alone are judgment that the economic situation of the world is unknown to many.

Oh and Cho - we import food by the bucket-load. We have one of the biggest account deficits in the world from the importing of products - a lot of which is food. It's not a case of it being cheaper to bring it in but more the fact Britain is a service economy - something that I fear will royally fuck us up in the future.

Oh and Seel you do realise that if you're going to use the 'overpopulation' arguement - you probably might want to be careful with it. Who do you want to reduce in population? LEDC's or MEDC's? Why should you leave the people to die who have the land to feed their population. A lot of African countries can happily feed their populations with the land they have - it's just they cannot due to current situations (and MEDC's are partly to blame for that). So, wouldn't it be better to start killing off those MEDC countries who have to import such food from other countries. Oh! UK is one of the first then!

Well apparently we arn't able to feed everyone, otherwise famine wouldn't happen.

Sorry but your view is so incredibly nearsighted that someone should take your vote off you since your about to do something stupid with it!

Yes everyone in Africa could probably be fed if we shipped food to them from around the world where we have enough. Sorry I completely 100% disagree with the concept that what you've just described is in any way a good idea!
People get horribly upset if a plane full of people travels needlessly from here to America, but somehow shipping in millions of tons of food to Africa from somewhere else each day is acceptable!!

So what should we do, go through life simply trying to survive and ensure that no-one anywhere in the world dies, or go through life with some enjoyment doing what we want to do. You appear to think that simply having food and water is enough. Others of us evolved past the point of that when that first ape picked up a piece of wood. Your on a computer game forum.. Why exactly are you playing computer games not either out in a farm producing food or helping transport it to Africa? Or do you think being able to enjoy some spare time playing a game is more important than helping a starving child while spouting that others who are prepared to actually admit that to themselves are pricks?

The "someone dies every 5 seconds" advertising campaign is wonderful and all but pretty much meaningless. Take the population of the earth, divide it by the number of seconds your average person lives for. That's how many people die every second regardless of if you ship them food or not.
Insead of concentrating on how to supply food to keep someone with zero quality of life alive, how about trying to work out how the people here in 200 years can have food and a decent quality of life. Sorry the answer to that does in no way revolve around saving every starving child in Africa. All your doing is believing what someone who wants your money is telling you to do, not actually trying to make it better in the long term. There's a word for people like that.. it's called clueless sheep.. now go Baa like a good sheep!

Yes there is a food crisis coming. And probably not the first one.

Personally i think the third world will be screwed for the next 50 years atleast. Lack of food, global warming population explosion and most of all lack of water. Those are obsticles we're not likely to overcome as long as the rich (thats us) keep being lazy and ignorant.

Still saves us having to endure all the charity tins eh? not all bad

I think we´ll be fooked before food will be an issue. For example when we run out of oil (probably sooner than you think). Or there will be some kind of zombie epidemic that turns people into 100m sprinting zombies.

me knowing the rise and fall of rice prices and why its happening will not allow me to do anything.

id rather concern my self with things more appropriate to my life.

Education is always the first step to achieving a greater good. History has shown that.

Once people are educated appropriated they may feel differently and may act differently.

Your last comment alone says how education IS needed. This will be appropriate to your life, and even if you do no more than understand it and acknowledge it - there has been some good done.

Of course, some will understand, acknowledge and react - but as you stated yourself - you don't care - so you let others attempt to clean up the mess that affects every one of us in the world.

It is okey to call someone a hypocrite when it is due Tris - but when you yourself are oblivious to the whole situation - then I don't agree with it.

Golena alot of the food for the developed world comes from the UNDEVELOPED WORLD. Your example of the plane is therefore wrong. Why don't MEDCs offer high wages for the crops - then the farmers can AFFORD to keep some of the food and live on it.

What we do is exploit the farmers and take the crops from them. It is not their fault. Similarly it is not ours - it's just a way of life we need to adjust.

The rest of your comments shocked me to be honest. These people are HUMAN BEINGS. They are exploited by us, they have been fucked over by us and they have some of the most resourceful land on the planet. If they aren't well off in that regard - then doesn't that tell you something about us MEDC's?

You are playing by unfair rules. We should concentrate on people in our countries why? UK import so much food it's unreal - food from LEDC's - grown by farmers who have to sell in order to get a nutritious diet, to afford fertilisers etc. Shouldn't it be the case of those that have the land, use the land and benefit from the land? Shouldn't we be trying to curb our population to a level that we can maintain without exploiting others.

I've studied this topic a fair deal - both in economical terms and geographical terms and I can tell you that there is a lot more to it than you may think.

Ofcourse, the first step for every MEDC would be for them to write out many of the debts to LEDC's. Gordon Brown is a good man in this regard :)

It wont affect all of us, just the people in Africa :p as at the end of the day if it comes to tighten our belts time charity is the first thing to go out the window

While tris does have a somewhat extreme view there is merit in what he is saying, how long should they be kept alive on hand outs? it is not helping the situation as they arent going anywhere the exact inverse is happening and they are requiring MORE food and the population in refugee camps is actually growing.

Sad fact of the matter is there is too much money going through charities for people to go, you know what, this isnt working lets try something else.
The red cross rakes in over $3 billion a year in donations, with more from organised events
The head of the red cross (you sitting down?) gets a wage of $468,599 a year, plus performance related bonuses, plus benefits, plus free travel
If you ever decide to go to one of these regions, look in first and club class and count how many charity badges you see on the suitcases.
When i volunteered to go help in the relief in Pakistan after that earthquake, everyone in economy were volunteers who paid themselves to go there, in contrast the team leaders, organisers and executives were all in club class expenses paid
Thats why i refuse to give to charity, if i want to do something i will go do it myself instead of feeding these leeches

I watched a video on this - granted it was made some years back but it may be a very bold statement which I've always kept in mind:

- if left unaided by MEDC interruption, most of the African countries would be able to feed themselves

If such a case had gone ahead - then I'm assuming the population boom wouldn't be so great either.

Currently, the African population is just above the European population with the Asian population the highest. The predicted amounts for 2050 put Africa at a fast growing amount (albeit not as much as Asia). Whilst I do agree this needs to be curbed - it does not need the Malthusian approach - because that would be wrong.

Instead, we need to approach this situation with education and awareness. Food needs to be rationed to an extent - UK overeat & UK overeat and to be honest - that food would hold much appeal elsewhere.

I could give you a hundred and one reasons why the situation in Africa affects everyone but probably the best one currently is the biofuels vs. crop growing debate. African farmers get such pitiful wages for their crops, many are now growing biofuels.

Noticed why the bread prices have increased massively as of lately?

Due to biofuels. Do we eat bread? Ofcourse we do - so it affects us.

UK wants to increase its consumption of fuel from plantation to ~6% very soon - means more biofuels being planted - higher crop prices - again affecting us and Africa.

im oblivious because me knowing or caring will do nothing to help anyone.
if i dont need to know about something, why should i educate my self?

i dont know why there is problems in africa. i dont need to know.
i dont know why there is an increase in food prices. i dont need to know.
i dont know how the government can change anything. i dont need to know.

i dont need to know because me knowing will not change a thing. there is not one single thing that i can do which will directly impact any problem thats going on in the world. the only thing that would help, is if i go there and help the people. by building houses, or digging wells or what ever.

You'll feed the kid but tomorrow he'll be hungry again. Throwing money at the problem is not going to solve it. There has to be an organized plan by all major countries to solve it for good. And private donations wont do that, discussion and voting just might.

i could say the same about you. you try and concern your self with things you can do nothing about. im sure thats very boring and depressing too. couldnt you be doing something useful that will actually help instead?

i dont need to know, i dont want to know, i couldnt give a shit. frankly i feel life is too short to worry pointlessly about something i cant do anything about.

heres another example. children are increasingly getting fatter these days. are you saying if i went away and researched the specifics and concerned my self with exactly why, its going to change anything? children being fat bastards will affect us all, because this problem is going to carry over into adulthood with all the related health problems that come with being a fatty.

You sound like a self-righteous hypocrite though. It's so easy to have an opinion about something, but if you really want to do something you need to inspire people to do something, politicians won't do anything and simply debating it won't either. Europeans have been debating Africa for the last 50 years, and it hasn't done much good. To inspire you need to set an example, so giving 2/3 of your income each month would be a good start :)

Personally, I don't care so much about Africa or anything outside of Europe that I can't culturally or socially relate to.

Im not an example for anyone. Me living like a monk wont make a difference.
If everyone thought about worlds issues like i do there would not be any
problems. And thats what im trying to accomplish. The reason why debating about it hasnt helped is because only a tiny minority do it. The rest just focus on shopping.

The difference Tris is - you've said that you don't give a shit - I have never said that.

I could (and may) have an impact on poverty in the future. It is something I am very interested in economically/geographically and maybe even writing an article that opens the eyes of others would be something I'd be proud of.

I have my whole life a head of me to help try and make changes to the developed world. Who knows - one of us may end up running for a political future.

One man can make a lot of different - Gordon Brown has shown that himself.

Why are you pessimistic? Have more faith in yourself in my opinion.

you can open peoples eyes but why would that change anything? do you not see the world we live in now? people care, for a day. they read a paper and talk for a day, then tomorrow everyone is talking about madonnas new shoes.
this is my point. ME caring will do nothing. the whole world needs to care or nothing will change. im not going to waste my life trying to know the ins and outs of problems that i cant do anything about.

and i cannot change the fact that i simply do not care. maybe its just something that is in your personality, that you care or not. im not the only one here who doesnt care. this is something thats "in" you or it isnt. what you say cannot change my mind, and i cant change yours. its "in" you that you will care about these problems.

anyone has the potential to can/may change it. i suppose it depends on if you want to devote your life to something that "may" happen.
