Or is it all just media hype and supply manipulation to drive prices and thus margains higher?

BBC NEWS | Business | Wal-Mart restricts rice purchases

Rice has risen 68% this year and it is the staple food for the majority of the world, if it is getting expensive for us in the developed world just imagine what will happen in the third world? There have already been riots over the price of rice in Egypt, I can see this going global if something in the world economy doesn't spark a recovery soon.

Well, the problem is that nowadays we eat "ineffective" things. The time/space it takes to get a cow ready you could've fed an army...maybe not that much, but you get the point. The thing is, the cow still tastes too good :p

Now add the recent growth in fuel made of crops to that and we're definately facing a problem. Yes, I'm pretty sure there is a lot of hype going on aswell, but it's pretty clear that each year we're loosing valuable soil to the desert (can see that quite well in China), but the amount of people is growing steadily.

The problematic thing is, that most of the time, the roots of our problems nowadays are so deep, it's impossible to dig them out. We're all used to fancy stuff now cause a few hundred years back the european nations decided, that they could rule the world and abuse everyone else to get a lot of luxury for themselves. Well, everybody wants to have high living standards, but sadly that's quite hard. Now it's the Chinese abusing their own population and the US killing for oil, what will be next. I think no nation can really point their fingers at anybody, cause at some point in history, everybody acted stupid.

It's funny that you post about it now, cause a few days back I thought about that problem already and at some point I came to the conclusion that after all, the Amish aren't that wrong with doing their own shit. At least they can laugh when everybody else dies ^^
So...who wants to start a village of peace with me? :p

Conclusion? Just stop getting children, then we'll all die and nobody will have to give a damn anymore :p

EDIT: I love that one comment: To anyone who says kids are bad, I say "in that case, you wouldn't be here"

I gotta answer...in that case, I wouldn't give a shit either :p

Its not a crisis of too little food, its a crisis about the price on it - its not like theres not enough food for all (distribution of the available food is the problem).

Soooooooo lets get the government to drop this EU money to farmers and tear down this tax wall around us so the unfortunate can actually eat instead?

Evolution.

"Hang on a minute!?! :eek7:"

Yes i said it! Evolution is taking care of a pest problem. We are really.

We overbreed, nature takes food away, people die, our race diminishes and food-problem goes away.

Only problem is humans and their "up ze bum" attitude towards nature and the "have to save all!" mentality.

Just let nature take it's course.

But, about food, we up here(aka, northern hemisphere) didn't eat rice before, we can survive without it.

Its all the French's fault, they refuse to even talk about farming subsidies.

Nestle warning prices for Breakfast cereals will go up due to a shortage of cereal crops being grown. They are blamming green fuel crops for the drop in production thoughot glbal warming.

Thank god we have a good climate to grow potatos here in the UK, we don't need to rely on rice unlike alot of middle east countries. We won't starve but those less fortunate will.

As for fishfaces post, I tend to agree. We will breed ourseleves out of existance if we are not careful, places like Africa have vast areas of land for producing food and yet they import and take food aid like it is going out of fashion. If they got thier act together they wouldn't need anything from anyone but they just seem happy to plod along narrowly dodging disaster after disaster.

There will be a massive food crisis when oil runs out, especially for us english as we import nearly all our food.

We have the land and the technology to feed 60 million people bud, ok we import at the moment as it is cheaper but we are forunate that our climate and technology allows to grow almost everything we need. If it came to the crunch we could get all the old farms back up and running, me might have stuggled in the second world war but we have high yield crops now and much more efficient harvesting/processing methods these days.

I saw a TV program a while ago about new technology that allows us to grow crops in huge skyskraper buildings. If there's not enough area to farm in, do what they did in the 20'ies... build tall! And it benefits the environment too since you will have very short distribution chains to all the city people.

Yes there is a food crisis coming. And probably not the first one.

Personally i think the third world will be screwed for the next 50 years atleast. Lack of food, global warming population explosion and most of all lack of water. Those are obsticles we're not likely to overcome as long as the rich (thats us) keep being lazy and ignorant.

Add to this the massive decline in the bee population due to a virus in the UK...

Well at least the advantage is: The less traditional Amish songs you know, the faster it will be to die ^^ So if you know no single song, then you can just shoot yourself straight away.

Hm....does this qualify as traditional Amish song? YouTube - Amish Paradise

P.S. No need to kill ourselves, I like the "eat fat people" idea ^^

I am more convinced that would be caused by GM crops than a virus to be honest.

"Have to save all" mentality... Well if you're willing to let millions of people to die because you cant be bothered to do anything about it then....... ok!

I think i've said this before.. You're an ignorant prick. :kissit:

(ps. i think you should visit Africa some day.. it could be enlightening)

Well most nations, that can afford it, do send some sort of support(money/food) to africa and places like it. And that is normally financed by taxes so in that way - without knowing where he is from - he is doing a small part, just by paying taxes.

Not easy to explain when I don't know the english words for the terms hehe, sorry. (BNP/bruttonationalprodukt og ulandsstøtte).

gorbachioo is coming across as doing something intentionally and specifically to help these people. this is the only way he could criticise others about doing nothing.

otherwise hes just a ****.

if hes only using money he needs for essentials to live (food and water for him self. you dont need heat, just wear more clothes) and sending the rest to feed people, fair play. but i doubt hes doing that. he probably lives in a brick house, owns a car, he has a computer obviously. its clear hes living beyond the basic needs. therfore how can he complain about anyone else?
