Its been done, but as you said its not possible to control it for any sort of viable application at the moment (well unless we have been lied to that is). I remember reading a few years back that they had run a fusion reactor for about 4 sec and in that time generated enough power to fuel the needs of a city of 500k people for months, at the cost of a few litres of water etc. Problem is the power is so intense they could not do anything with it except let it discharge. Its like having a miniature sun sitting in the reactor chamber.
