Its been done, but as you said its not possible to control it for any sort of viable application at the moment (well unless we have been lied to that is). I remember reading a few years back that they had run a fusion reactor for about 4 sec and in that time generated enough power to fuel the needs of a city of 500k people for months, at the cost of a few litres of water etc. Problem is the power is so intense they could not do anything with it except let it discharge. Its like having a miniature sun sitting in the reactor chamber.

Cold fusion all ready exists, it has just been covered up by the oil companies because there is very little money to be made from selling power generated by cold fusion. The technology should provide abundant power at very low cost, everyone knows that the raw material for is practically free so there will be riots if they tried to charge the same kind of prices we pay at the moment. It just doesn't make good buisness sense for these people to allow cold fusion to come out until the oil wells run dry. Mark my words, when those wells run dry someone will amazingly discover how to create cold fusion and the crisis will be over, the oil companies several hundred billion dollars richer.

fusion is not the same as cold fusion

We can do fusion, thats what your describing, we pump in loads of electricity and do it all the inside of torus made of plasma

Ok I read around there, its a very clever page with no real indication of the state of any 'science' more a warmer to the appearance 'new cold fusion', and some attempt to sell Arthur C Clarke books... I was not conviced by the writups of vauge russian and Indian scientists in repeating the work. In fact to me the entire page smells strongly of 'conspiricy stories', much like I could show you a web page devoted to why man didnt land on the moon or some such.

As a conspiricy story, I cant disprove it and wont try any more, all I can say is that if you tell someone about cold fusion you should let them know that this is your belief and not something that most scientists would subscribe too.

They are all scientists clever clogs. The point is a scientist believes in science, not superstition or anything else. If the experiment is repeated with the same conditions it should give the same results. Thats science, thats what all my favourite scientists (even P moore) believe in! You cant repeat cold fusion, it can only be done if no ones looking and you wanna be famous, so any good scientist would support me on those grounds.

its pretty hard to have precise constant variables when you're dealing with nuclear/particle physics, you can't guarantee that everything is going to be the same. A stray electromagnetic wave could change the results, and there are still alot of unknown variables.

You can't rule out the fact that its possible, and with the rate technology is progressing at the moment, I'm sure alot of things thought "impossible" will be definately plausible within the next 50 years, the universe is infinate afterall.

The results are there, but they just havent perfected the experiment to make them conclusive.

Iran is nowhere near as bad as much of the western media portray, you are right. The problem is that a good 15% of the population have what can be considered to be extremist tendencies, they are hard core fundamentalists that truely believe that Westerners are the devil and Jihad against the west is what Allah expects from them. Now some of these people have to be working in the Iranian nuclear program, it only has to be one person though and uranium can go missing, hell it has happened at Sellafield here in the U.K. so it can happen anywhere. If that material gets into the hands of a terrorist group then one of five countries is going to get hit by a dirty bomb sooner or later. Israel is most likely as it is probably logistically much easier for terrorists to get into Tel Aviv or one of the other Israeli cities than it would be to get themselves and the bomb into London or any of the major U.S. cities.

All I am saying is that this material is being or can be produced in a very dangerous country, it only takes one nutcase and the terrorists will have thier hands on the missing ingrediant, do you seriously think they won't use it or send it to Checnya and let them use it on the Russians?

Iran doesnt have nuclear weapons, its attempting to start a nuclear power generation program, which in turn could be used to produced enriched uranium for use in bombs. Its a matter of quite some time before they do, Iran are well know for playing up their abilites, its highly likely that their nuclear research is at a lot lower level than you think.

Should we deny a country the ability to produce its own nuclear fuel? Its hypocritcal to deny them it while nuclear technology (and bombs) are used/made widely used in most of the western world, India, Pakistan etc.

Press snippets like the 'wipe Israel off the map' thing are Iranian rethoric that goes on every day, its nothing new, the fact that it even was reported in the west just shows that someone is shaping our media and your opinions for their own ends..

When Iran gets nuclear weapons, its doubtfull they will ever be used. Nuclear weapons are a great deterant, you would have to be awfully silly to nuke a country that has allies and its own however much you wished their country wasnt there...

If they want to produce their own fuel, fine. No problem.

I like to think Iran knows better than to use any future nuclear weapons it might produce, as it will only mean reciprocal retaliation. You make some excellent points m8.

but you do realise there is machines that synthesise DNA if you input the correct sequence? and you realise books are readily available that shows the DNA sequences for things like small pox and other biological nasties?

I am all for iran having nuclear power, we need more countries like Iran who stick their middle finger up and tell the yanks where to go.
You cant say to a effectively still developing country, you can devlop.. just dont use too many fossil fuels as it causes global warming, dont use Nuclear power because you "might" make nukes.

As for the government, they were democtatically elected. You cant say you can have democracy so long as the people we like are in charge, it just doesnt work like that.. the whole point of democracy is so the people vote into power who they feel is best for the country at the time.

But then i also am VERY against forcefully removing reigemes(sp?) in countries, like Iraq for example. It is my belief that countries evolve at their own pace and should be left to do so at their own pace, but that is a completely different discussion for a different thread
