IP's and gaining knowledge from an IP

Is this possible?

Ie. I have an IP and i want to gain details about what service provider the IP is from etc. etc.

personal reasons - am not aiming to shoot some old man down or naut.

beouse u coul find out the addres wheres the Ip from and thats allredy personal information to the ISP. and whit the addres u can get the persons name and so on infromation!

or u just want to know that ISP the IP owner just uses??

If its a .com, .net or .org use this place .
I don't think it is illegal, the information is freely available.
Also if you google for 'IP address information tool' you may find some others.

yes freely aviable, in many cases a simple traceroute might tell you alot.
Infact some ISP´s even add apartment numbers, *shrug*.

Nah its not illegal.

The organisation "RIPE" handle the IP allocations on the internet, you can enter the IP address into their whois search : http://www.ripe.net/whois : this will bring back details of the owner of the IP address, or if its from a DHCP pool you will probably get the name of the ISP serving them.

You can see that the IP i keyed in is one of a range 81.6.254.0 - 81.6.254.255 which belong to Nildram who are an ISP here in the uk, a quick google search would show that Most companies or organisations when requesting an IP or registering a domain name will be asked to enter their personal information this is recorded on the database and can be queried by anyone if you dont want this information displayed you specificaly have to "opt out" of the directory.

But a word of warning, dont get into the habbit of posting personal IP addresses on the net or forums tis bad stuff.

Note though!

Dont go bashing down the "person:" on the whois report with a baseball bat, it is in most cases a guy working at the ISP.
