Job, desensitising is one thing. What if your allergy is so hair-trigger that there is no "safe exposure"? Some people have allergies that mean anaphylaxis or nothing.
I personally suffer from asthma that gets triggered by some allergens. I've tried desensitising, but at the end of the day it comes down to prevention and reaction. Prevention with a steroid inhaler to reduce the liklihood of an attack starting, and reaction with a salbutamol inhaler if I'm unfortunate enough to have an attack start.

Reason why there's so much allegy ridden young-uns around is because parents are overprotective. We used to run around in the mud, rain, strange dogs around, no one minded if dogs licked our face and so forth. Get some resistance in that body :p

Yeah, everyone is obsessed with anti-bac this, sterile that. Kids get no immune system and end up sickly adults...though that is not necessarily tied to intolerance.

Oh yeah, have to be careful not to derail the thread with my comments. People are intolerant against bacteria? (y)

There's a grain of truth in that, but I had that scuffed-knees upbringing and didn't start getting allergies until I was well into adulthood. There's more going on; I definitely have to avoid certain cleaning products (biological washing powder/liquid for instance, lots of brands of fabric conditioner, gilette shave gel), because they'll make me itch, especially in glandular areas (pits and bollocks). Its not going to kill me, but it is something I've had to start dealing with in the last 5-10 years, and I don't think I'm alone in that. There are so many chemical compunds floating about in the water these days that maybe the problem is we're gradually being sensitized to things where we never were before.

Yeah, it's not just the upbringing, but the underlaying problem is in the same territory. As raven said, obsession with anti-bac etc.
