Right... I have a Windows (XP) box which is connected the the internet via a dialup USB ISDN modem thinger, and a Slackware Linux box which sits in the next room.

They're plugged together by a nice big length of cat5e crossover cable.

I want to be able to surf the interweb from the Linux box... How do I do it? :)

Bear in mind that I'm a complete networking and Linux noob.

Thanks!

First - enable ICS on the windows box, then DHCP on the Linux one (slackware should have a control panel like thingy to do this - but don't trust me too much, I only ever played with slackware 5 years ago!)

Reboot the Linux box and it should sort out a suitable IP address for itself from your ICS machine, as well as making the ICS machine it's default gateway and DNS server (you can check this with the 'ifconfig -a' and 'netstat -r' commands). If so, then your fave Linux browser should work!

You may not have a choice in this, but might I suggest that, if you're a Linux noob, you don't use Slackware? Something friendlier like Fedora or SuSE might be better?

Nah if he can learn slackware he can use any distro,
if he learns with the moshy friendly gui distro's he'll never learn the true power of CLI.

My thoughts exactly :)

Now, off to fiddle.

Just dropped in to say thanx for this thread! I googled this place up, after long hours of trying to do exactly what tRoG is doing, tho in my case I am using FC3. I'm a total noob at linux and networking also. And this being the simplest answer to a situation I had made very complicated, was just plain awesome! Followed exactly what phlash said and blam it worked. I'd be here for hours trying to explain what "other" sites were trying to have me do. So anyway thanks a butload!

ICS is only meant for a very small amount of users anyway. It gives IP's in the 192.168.1.1 range and it works. The reason it's so "pants" is because if you want more users to use the internet you buy something better. It's supposed to be a noob device!
