Just read this article on the beeb BBC NEWS | Technology | Rehab staff 'killed web addict' and it got me thinking about internet addiction. I find myself on the PC either browsing the net or playing online games pretty much every day, it can range from 5 minutes to 10 hours depending on what other things i've got going on - objectively that could be seen as a form of addiction but I would never consider myself addicted as I only use the internet in my spare time.

What are your personal views on internet addiction, how long do you spend on the net on average (be it browsing forums or gaming) and do you consider yourself addicted?

I suppose I try to get on the PC everyday to check emails, brows this damn place and play online whenever I can. I have deffo been addicted to MMORPG'S (actually, just DAoC!) but PC addiction no.

Addictions generally alter reality, so I wonder how far that might be part of the definition of addiction?

lol I couldn't function without it tbh; I need it for pretty much all important aspects of my life, my degree is an online based system, I work in an information profession so need access to current information all the time, my friends are all online (basically you guys) so no net = no social interaction also I shop and bank online.

I go on pretty much everyday but when I was on holiday (2 flipping yrs ago!!!) I didn't have net access and it didn't phase me at all, I wouldn't say I'm addicted to it so much as dependant upon it for certain elements of my life.

Though I have known people who had a really unhealthy relationship with the net they lost RL stuff like houses, jobs, partners & friends all because of their desires to play games and go on line... I'd call that an addiction tbh.

If you can't stay away; addiction.

Simple as that.

Stay away from the net for three days, if no problem, no addiction.

I normally spend hours on the computer every day, but that's mainly because I have nothing to do and get bored sitting around at home. I'd much rather be out with friends etc, and when I go away I co completely cold turkey on technology, other than occasionally listening to my ipod, and I just don't miss it at all. For me all the net/PC is, is a way of releaving boredom when there's nothing else to do.

I use it at work and almost all my hobbies are online, so roughly 12-13 hours per day... was on a short weekend vacation without internet for 3-4 days and it was wonderful :)

No addiction here, but i use it for pretty much everything i do :(

I think I have a mild addiction. Sometimes I wake up wanting to use my computer even though I have more important things to do, and occasionally when I'm out with friends I secretly wish I was at home playing a game or something.
But I always force myself to do other things and if somebody invites me somewhere I always say yes even if I had a load of gaming planned for that night because I usually do enjoy going out even if I don't want to to begin with.
I can stop playing if I want to: a few weeks ago I stopped for 7 days just to see if I could, but I'd rather not, and until I see it as actually getting in the way of my life I'm going to carry on how I am.
My computer is usually on for like 12 hours a day if I am at home, but some of that time I will be afk. When I was at college I played about 15-30 hours of games a week, but now I have not much better to do its more like 25-40.

Ive always held my head up high when it comes to internet " addiction "

The sheeple I really feel sorry for are the tv soap addicted masses. With the interwebs, the knowledge constantly aquired, the skills learned, the friends made is far far healthier than other addictions, never mind the soap fuelled masses :)

More internet ! Give socket in head so I can just plug in ffs !

(dreams of being in Neuromancer kicking in)

I fully intend on downloading my consciousness to some other format by the time i am 80, yes i read to much cyberpunk.

I have visions of some junkie-MMO player twitching from the d'ts - clawed hand outstretched desparately as some guy in a chinese army uniform bludgeons him to death with an old crt monitor...
