Interesting network card for gamers

Spotted this over at Hardocp and thought I would post here to see what people think. Basically it is a new type of network card that lowers latency thus reducing lag. The idea of bypassing the Windows TCP/IP stack is certainly interesting.

seems a bit OTT lol. these days with the high availability of mega fast connections and good contention ratios i wonder if there is any need?

dropping from say 30ms to 5ms or what ever isnt going to make a difference imo.

I cant see this taking off to be honest, the difference would be very negligble on a fast machine.
I can see it being useful on boxes with less cpu power tho, but is really worth the additional cost is the question

I partially agree, the big benefit I see though is bypassing the Windows TCP/IP which is a complete fat bloated pig. As you said on slower machines this could make a big difference for gamers because all the cpu cycles for networking are saved when the work is offloaded to the NIC, so you get a faster connection and a small performance boost in your games at the same time.

well .. it could come in handy when u run smack into that zerg in NF and dont really feel in the mood of lagging at all !
other than that .. not really useful with a good machine as u guys said

It costs nearly £150 for the card. You'd be better off spending this money on more RAM or a better graphics card where you'd get a better return on each pound you spend.

This card would have been gold 5 years ago. But by now I really don't care that I lose 2% of my cpu cycles and have 30ms ping in stead of 10 ms

Indeed. But that card is just a 3d picture though, it might be on the other side on the real thing.
