Intensive driving courses... whats your view?

I think the old "Dad teaches you to drive" thing works wonders(if the dad ain't an a-hole), 'cause dads(or moms), punish and rip you a new one if you f*ck up. Or even MIGHT f*ck up

Unless you need your licence in a weeks time i'd recommend the "normal" lessons.

When your first learning to drive then there's a lot of stuff to learn and trying to cram it all in is going to mean you don't remember all the stuff. You might pass your test (although most people that do the week long courses actually end up failing the test at the end of the week) but your probably still not going to be 100% sure of what your doing. With normal lessons you can apply for the test when you and your instructor feel confident your ready and not have the deadline of next monday looming so it's much less stressful as well.

6 hours a day for a week is usually enough but be warned, these courses cause serious fatigue because you are constantly driving for hours on end, by the end of each day you will be worn out mentally and physically. By the end of the week you will be a mental and physical wreck. For that reason alot of people taking these courses fail first time because they are so tired come Friday afternoon when they take thier test. Better to do the week long course, then have a couple of 1 hour driving lessons the following week followed by the test towards the end of the second week.

Any old joe schmo can learn to drive. Especially with a crash course. I've got loads of friends which do it. Noob one week and then a professional driver the next.

Spend a good 500/600quid on a crash course and you're bound to pass. The AA do them. All it is, is like 30hours driving in a week.

You have to answer 50 questions in your theory now, and i think its 80 in your hazard perception. GL though

Mostly because people here drive like idiots. I drive in town only when i have to, and i always expect some moron to come crashing into me from be... erm *eyes OT crowd* ...the side!

drivings lessons are purely to make you test standard, nothing more. so doing 40 hours of a lessons a week is no different than doing 2 hours a week for 20 weeks. for example.

It's worth bearing in mind that a lot of people don't actually do well with intensive lessons because of the sheer amount of driving and concentrating you have to do. Most peoples concentration drops after 2 hours of driving, even less if you don't know what you are doing. Personally i think if you go down the intensive route try and get half a dozen lessons in beforehand in the weeks leading up to it so you have a headstart and ease a bit of the pressure.
People son't realise just how much hard work driving for 4/5 hours a day is

the first couple of lessons are very tiring so will be hard to take it all in tbh

I done 4 hours a week and i think that was just the right amount, i passed after 2 months which isnt long at all

cheers for the input chaps i think i shall do the suggested thing of a few normal lessons previous and post a week long course (b2 works with a gal who's trainging to be a driving instructor and she also recommended this)

driving at night shouldnt be an issue...im in bed by 20:00hrs seriously i am lol so if im out driving at night im sleep driving and everyone is doomed.

now then for the most important question...

I will go with Chodax on this, I bought an intensive course for myself 2 years ago. Not every day from 9-5 but 2 hours a night 5 days a week for 3 weeks.

After 4 lessons I actually got worse driving than I was in my first lesson. I decided to take a weeks break and when I went back everything just slipped into place.

While in theory it is a relatively simple process, it is alot for your brain to take in, you are constantly under pressure, gears, braking, watching the road ahead at the side and behind you takes alot of getting used to.

I still failed first time, but it was only on a reverse around the corner, it also gave me an insight into what the test was about. In reality its no different to a lesson but you gotta hit your manouveres first time. 2nd time I breezed it with only 2 minors during the whole test. I got reverse round a corner again, emergency stop and reverse into parking bay.

do they give you another exam free or for less money if you dont pass if they say "we guarentee youll pass!" i mean what do they do if your totally crap?


im going to call Mrs Puff and get her to teach me ;P
