I'm looking for companies who will provide car insurance for short periods of time. I.e. just for a month, or for a weekend or something. Does anyone know of any?

I remember when I was with Direct Line I got a friend added to my existing insurance for a week only to drive my car, not sure if it can be done as a separate insurance tho.

Er, don't drive. Probably blatantly fuckin obvious now though :D

The "mainstream" insurance companies just won't do it. They're not geared up for it - on new policies anyway. Maybe they'll add a driver for a week, but won't do an entire new quote for a month.

The only thing they suggest is getting a years, and cancelling it after a month. But if I pay the year I have to find 2 grand to lay out, and then they charge a cancelation fee. If I pay monthly and then cancel it most of them have already charged the first 2 months in advance.

All that on top of finding a good quote anyway....is proving very difficult.

The person who's car it is should add you as an additional driver, rather than you sort out personal insurance. If thats what you've already said then dunno.

how long, whose car and why? And also if you are a young male then mostly I would forget about it...

Edit:/ 21... shouldnt be too hard then?

On to what policy? There is no policy, that's the problem.

It's my car, registered in my mums name. The current insurance runs out on March 5th, but I need to be able to drive it until April 1st, at which point I'm getting rid of it.

I don't want to garage it for a month cos it costs me fuckloads to have, AND I do actually need to get to work.

It's not about age. It's about the fact that insurance companies won't offer you insurance that lasts for any other period than a year (that I have found so far).

If there is an existing policy then extend it for only a month and get yourself included on it.

Not for a few months. I'm going to Spain for a month first, then taking some more time off work :D

I'm going to wait till I'm 21, and in July I can have my speeding points scrubbed off. SO I'm hoping those two combined will reduce my costs somewhat. Specially as I plan on getting a lotus elise :D

Insurance does not go down the older you get - fact.

I am 25 years old, clean license, max no claims but every year my insurance keeps on going up. The whole thing is a sham

Maybe so, but every year I get older, as it stands at the moment, My mum gets an extra years no claims bonus (I wiped most of them out in my first year!). And seeing as I do all my insurance in my mums name, it counts for a lot. My policies get cheaper every year, I dropped a GRAND off this years over last years.

My points also add about 400 quid to the cost too, so once they're gone (this July) I'm gonna be getting much smaller quotes.

No. Low risk location. I phone on average about 10 different companies every year. Full no claims.

If you have full no claims and a clean licence, your insurance can't really get any lower, that's the problem. For young drivers it get's less every year they build up a no claims year, or get a few years away from an accident, or a conviction or something.

3rd party fire and theft your car for a year, then when you're done with it get a mate to burn it and not only will you have rid of unwanted insurance but you'll be quids in.

Until you come to insure your new car.

It won't count for much when you get your own policy since your Mum's got the no claims not you. Definitely wait for your points to go though before getting your own policy.

Can't imagine the insurance cost of an Elise with no no claims bonus :eek6:

Yeah, that will be a problem I'll have to address further down the line....

But put it this way, imagine insuring an elise with no no claims bonus when I'm 20, not far from an accident, and with 3 points for speeding :)

Do you realise that points last for 5 not 3 years? 3 years on license but Insurance Companies ask if there have been any convictions within the last 5 years... they are all also linked to a central database that will check your details from previous insurance

I'm aware that most do ask for 5. Some only 3, same with accidents, all companies are different. However, the further away from you they are, the less they are gonna affect you. And the fact that the licence is clean I would imagine at least "looks" better.
