How..

Basically just ripped out a 250gb sata drive I had in an old machine in which the main drive was an IDE drive, there was a card that plugs into the mobo that connects to the SATA drive. I want to stick the SATA drive into another PC that also boots from an IDE drive, now I didnt put the SATA drive in the original machine so no idea how to set it up in the new one - anyone got a clue as I am guessing I will need to either fiddle around with the BIOS or install some drivers? Dont want to go breaking it by hitting it with a hammer til it works tbh... so far have stuck the card in and the SATA drive but it hasnt recognised it , so erm...what do I do next?

Help!!

If it helps this is like the card I have plugged in Erm wtf is it?
Its not the actual make but looks the same type..

I am guessing you’re talking about an External PCI SATA card that allows you use SATA on mobos that doesn’t support onboard SATA. If your different mobo doesn’t support it just plug the card into the PCI slot and connect up you’re SATA. I would use the SATA as main and just put the IDE on cable select.

90% of mobos you have to enable raid and SATA in the bios but I am not sure what you do with a PCI card, what mobo you have?

Edit - I just saw the link, and got it all wrong, just plug in the SATA drive to the onboard SATA controller and enable it in the bios, don't use the IDE as main, what mobo do you have?

Hmm not sure of the mobo off the top of my head tbh - a mate of mine got me the PC on the cheap.. I managed to get into the BIOS but the options didnt mention SATA - will have a look 2moro and list the options. The IDE drive is the one with XP on it so I am guessing it has to remain as the main drive - I cba doing a fresh install as I have also already loaded up the SATA drive with data ready for when I dropped it in.
How do I find out the make/model of mobo? (total noob when it comes to stuff like that - though I can plug bits in and they work..I just don't understand how or why most of the time)

Download CPU-Z open it up, click on the mainboard tab, screeny it and post it.

It is a good idea to use the SATA drive as main and do a fresh install, much faster, back up you’re data to the ide drive or just get rid of it. You don’t need a slow IDE drive with a 280GB SATA Drive.

The IDE only has XP on it and a few bits n bobs - not bothered about speed - its only going to be a download/media PC hence would rather just bodge it in and get it running - Its never going to be used for any other purpose tbh.

I will check it later (in work atm) but the IDE drive I think was set to Primary Master or something and then the options were Secondary Master , Primary Slave, Secondary Slave - or something to that effect - which one do I need to set as the SATA - will also check the options as pretty sure there were some acronyms etc but not one for SATA....

OK my options for the secondary master, primary slave etc are : None, Auto, User Type HDD, CD-ROM, LS-120, ZIP, MO, Other Atapi device...

I would guess User Type HDD? This being for the secondary drive being the SATA drive .. when I click on user type though it gives more more options - Translation method (wtf I didnt buy a french drive did i ?) chs capacity and so on... so now I am not sure about guessing User Type HDD?

I have no clue :( Cant find anything on teh interweb either to point me in the right direction atm :(

Just take the drives out and on the back make sure the jumper on IDE is set as master and SATA as cable select.

Will do!!

Also found something on the great wide interweb about needing a driver for the PCI? card that enables me to use the SATA drive - I will rip the card out and see what make it is in a mo and see if that helps as well once I get some drivers onto it ....

~curses the mate who built the original PC and didnt warn me about this guff or givf me cd's with drivers on~

Ignore my first post you don't have a PCI Card, that link you posted it's just allows a IDE drive to be plugged in a SATA Port. You can use it on you're IDE drive or just use the normal IDE; you don't need any SATA drivers as you're not doing raid.

now I am lost then - I just popped the machine open - the card I stuck into the mobo is a maxtor pci/150 card or something to that effect - just downloaded the drivers for it and they want to unzip onto a 3.5 drive for installation purposes or something - cant find a damn disk anywhere in the house so will have to nick one in work 2moro - tried using a virtual drive but thats gone nowhere fast :(

Talk about something doing my head in atm... the dude who builds most of my machines is being an arse atm so I soooo want to get this working without him just so I can mention it when I see him that he aint my PC god !

Just re-read your last post - the card I thought allows me to use a sata drive on a none sata mobo, hence the need for drivers etc, also thought I read somewhere XP doesnt recognise sata as standard so is that why on the BIOS there is currently no sata option until i get these drivers installed? will try this disk malarky 2moro... otherwise if anyone wants a free PC it will be lying outside my window in several pieces in a day or two - bring a dustpan and brush :(

Does that card or your mobo display on device manager? Is there yellow question mark for any device?

Erm, "something to that effect" when you know exactly what the card is? Link for the download page?

Ok, googled it :S

1) there probably is yellow question mark for that card in your device manager.
2) unzip those drivers (no, you dont need floppy, change the directory for c:/maxtorsata or something).
3) right click that device with yellow question mark and select "update driver".
4) No, not this time -> install from specific location -> c:/maxtorsata/winxp

If failing in part 1 :

1) right click my computer -> manage -> disk management and see if the mobo is there.

Oh, and do you see message "Maxtor sata/150 PCI" in bootup?

You lost me :eek7: , was you using this on a IDE drive http://linitx.com/product_info.php?cPath=104&products_id=947 or a SATA Pci card.

I gather you trying to install SATA drivers and can't find a floppy?

I know he only needs them for raid, he just has to plug the SATA drive in and sort it out in the bios.
Nah, he dont need to enter BIOS at all and I believe that card doesn't even support RAID.

Follow the guide I posted but make sure you get that "Maxtor sata/150 PCI card" message in bootup and if you dont get it unplug the card and try another PCI-slot. Oh, and make sure that you have SATA power cable plugged... :p

And you are a genius !!! :D

(Just to warn ....my next thread is probably going to be when I try and get the wireless network up and running and stuff it up)

F**k tech helplines or tech support in work...this is ace :)

Just had an oooo shit moment then - unplugged the power cable from the PC to check the power cable into the sata drive, fiddled about with it, thought it felt like it was in etc, turned the PC on...and nothing..cue slight panic followed by realising the PC power cable hadnt been put back in :)

Righto HDD isnt showing ... should I hit it with a hammer now?

Try BIOS then I suppose :S I'm not 100% sure do you need SATA power cable for SATA drives ;p Hold your hand on that HDD to feel does it run.

OK I'm going in... any idea which one it should be set to - Primary Slave, Seconday Master , or Secondary Slave?

Its still not showing a SATA option either - None/Auto/User Type HDD/CD-ROM/LS-120/ZIP/MO/Other ATAPI Device are my options...

Just checked on Device Manager - it is showing in there as a drive - do I need to update that or owt?

Right click my computer -> manage -> disk management and see if the HDD is there. It has to be there! Make the disk management windows large enough to see it as whole! :p
