Just in the process of making my new comp and so, am about to install the new CPU (AMD 64 3400+). I’m experienced in all other parts of building a computer but this is the first time Ill be installing a processor and heat sink by myself. I’ve downloaded the instillation vid’s from the AMD site and have been reading up quite allot but just in case… any tips?

spread the thermal paste thin

if you hear it snap, you pushed down too hard on the heatsink

thats about it really.

no

when you push down the support bar you will hear a click - i heard it and thought i had fucked the processor.

make sure you have the pins aligned correctly, when you are putting the processor in what i did was to have my pinkie on the northbridge heatsink to earth myself, and slotted it in. Dont touch the pins.

The paste isn't conductive. Just follow the instructions and Bob's your uncle. Its easy. Don't force things if they don't fit.

prolly too late...but its quite good to install the cpu/fan with the mobo out of the case...you get much better access, much better light and theres less chance of cracking the mobo when applying the heatsink spring

Don't be too scared to push firmly on the heatsink though. I was, and I found out that I would never get it on if I didn't push hard enough that I thought it would break :)

It's not an AthlonXP, there's no core to crush. Unless you meant press down so hard he cracks the solder points on the motherboard? :eek7:

had a mate who pushed down on the heatsink so hard it snapped the solder points and cracked the mobo itself.. he was a muppet. ;) he'd also sat the mobo wrong so there was no direct support under the part he was pushing down on.
