inner sanctum (catacombs)

I managed to get to Highlord Mal'or Valh in the inner sanctum just now and killed him, but he didnt drop anything, as soon as he died another lord popped with about 10 red cons, surfice to say he schooled me good.
Question is, what did i do wrong? Do i need to clear the entire dungeon of mobs first? really miffed because it took a while to get to him with my hero/BB.

I did clear the entire dungeon before killing the highlord.
But when he died he repopped as an undead, together with about 10 undead friends. I guess you only get drops after you've killed those as well.
