So Deebs, why did I get an infraction when people in general spam way more than saying me saying Tilda Tilda Tilda in a thread in an effort to get him to post another.

Its another one of Jupitus's stupid actions which is purely because he has a problem with me.

Jupitus has always had it out for me and just hands out punishment if he feels like it with no precedence for it.

If you can point me to the threads that were closed in what you think were incorrect then I will look into it. Remember, if you ever feel someone has overstepped their mark, send me a private message and I will look into it.

Fair enough, I wrongly assumed that the infractions system was something new ontop of the warnings system. Apologies for that, I should have asked for more information before commenting on that specifically.

My point on overzealous moderating was to do with a couple of threads....

https://forums.freddyshouse.com/technical-help68/218087-torrent-downloads.html

and...

https://forums.freddyshouse.com/off...hit-while-running-full-speed.html#post3171052

Ok, now the first one should not have been closed, no rules were broken or illegal links posted, copyright infringment was neither commented on or endorsed. That was over zealous moderating at it's worst, closing a thread that served a purpose and was helping someone with a technical issue. I do understand why the moderator might have been worried how the thread could develop but you can't lock a thread just because someone might possibly make a post that might break the rules sometime in the future.

The second thread is tougher, yes it is crude and very much of an adult nature. It was marked 'NSFW' though and the title gave more than enough information to pre-warn anyone. I have seen links to worse over the years here on FreddysHouse and those threads weren't closed, for that reason and the others above I honestly believe that this thread should not have been closed either.

What worries me is when moderators decide to become the moral compass for the community, that is what seems to have happened in both cases here and it resulted into a form of censorship. The relevant moderators seem to have seen something they didn't like or agree with and promptly locked the threads, enforcing thier own opinions or morals instead of the rules. Now if the second thread breaks any rules then fair enough but we need to be even handed and do the same with any other threads that cross that same boundary. Personally I don't see what was wrong with it considering the warnings given in the title, Off Topic has always been home to the wild and whacky threads and I really hope that isn't going to change.

Just one last thing, I am not making a personal attack against either of moderators involved here. I think they do an important job here and I respect them for it, this community cannot function without them because as has been proven by MaCaBr3's stupid post earlier there will always be people who want to push peoples buttons and get a reaction. The mods in DAoC forums generally do a great job at keeping that under control and long may that continue. All I ask is that the moderators follow the rules with regards to locking threads instead of following thier own moral compass.

As long as the thread is tagged properly I have no problem with someone posting a picture of a turd. Yes it isn't pretty but come on, we all drop one every day, it isn't something you can avoid.

All I ask is that the moderators follow the rules with regards to locking threads instead of following thier own moral compass.

we have a decent set of rules now embedded in the infraction list. they cover everything that is in the COC and everything that we regard as common sense.

given the reasonably large volume of threads on FH and the complaints of us mods being overzealous fascists being few and far between I feel that we're doing moderately (ahem) well.

when you say moral compass I shall certainly hold up my hand in shame. the forum I mod, ie the "dreaded" General forum, is small compared to this part and the people posting there have usually known each other for years and are prone to sticking to their personas, so I stick to _my persona and mod now and then if needed. having said that, I don't think anyone there would ever say something along the lines of what was said earlier in this thread.

anyway, we try, and sometimes we get it wrong. if you feel that you've been wronged, then you take it up with that mod, or you take it up with Jupitus or Deebs if you think it is necessary to bother them with your (lack of) right to post (pictures of poop) whatever thing :)

We have never censored any swearing apart from the 4 letter word that starts with a C, no need to post it, you all know it.

you censored the word h0bit too you evil bastards! :(

seriously though, would rather have an infraction than a random % warning depending on how any particular mod feels at any given time.

That is exactly what the infraction system now gives us. The warning system employed allowed a mod to issue a warning without reason or notice. There was no accountability, with infractions there is. Normal moderators can only issue infractions for which one has been defined. If it warrants a much harsher punishment it is escalated. Additionally the recipient of the infraction/warning will receive a PM with a reason why.

The moderators really do an outstanding job on these forums and yes there are times when they too can make mistakes just like anyone else on these forums including myself.

I am sorry but his post was just flamebait and totally uncalled for whatever the reason. As some people have said, he may not have known about my mother, but still, he should not have said that in this thread. There are times and places when you would joke with silly comments unfortunately he chose both the wrong time and place.

Fair enough, I wrongly assumed that the infractions system was something new ontop of the warnings system. Apologies for that, I should have asked for more information before commenting on that specifically.

No problem. This system really is much better for everyone moderators included. Read above for more information.

I do understand why the moderator might have been worried how the thread could develop but you can't lock a thread just because someone might possibly make a post that might break the rules sometime in the future.

Ok, let's take the first thread. Having read it in its entirety I would have not closed the thread but let's not forget that each moderator is calling upon their knowledge and understanding when deciding what to do when reading threads. I suspect, though I could be wrong, that the thread was closed early just in case it spiralled out of control and into a warez discussion.

Hmm, this one is indeed a tough one to call. In the CoC there is a rule as follows:

We permit image posting but use your common sense - vulgar, obscene or graphically pornographic images are not okay.

What was posted would indeed fall under the above and I would have done exactly the same. Having read the thread, yes we all have take a dump but do we have to look at it in this disgusting manner? What benefit does it bring to us?

What worries me is when moderators decide to become the moral compass for the community, that is what seems to have happened in both cases here and it resulted into a form of censorship. The relevant moderators seem to have seen something they didn't like or agree with and promptly locked the threads, enforcing thier own opinions or morals instead of the rules. Personally I don't see what was wrong with it considering the warnings given in the title, Off Topic has always been home to the wild and whacky threads and I really hope that isn't going to change.

I agree that no moderator including myself should ever enforce their own beliefs on someone else. Many people that know me will tell you that I am so against censorship and generally go off on one when asked about my views. Having said that there will be times when the moderators will step in and moderate threads/posts which break the CoC. Remember every mod will interprete the wording of the CoC slightly differently.

If you feel it was wrong then send me or Jupitus a PM and we will look into it just don't start a slagging match as that will just piss the wrong people off and you will achieve nothing.

Thanks for the words. Sometimes I think that the mods do get a hard time and only ever get bad comments instead of good ones. Every now and then it does make a difference if a genuine post is made thanking the mods for their efforts, remember they too do this in their spare time for no reward.

Ok, you want an honest answer, in that thread which was not in an off-topic forum I would have given you the infraction for posting a completely irrelevant message which would have been classed as spam.

Ok so you're saying keep the spam inside OT, I guess I could.

As for you Jupitus, I have already said what I think about you out loud so no need to carry it on further here.

I think the mod's do a pretty good job, but i also know people like Gamah, myself and a few others play near the naughty line alot.

As we never step over it, the mods cant really punish us, so i think when we do cross it, they think "Yes, i finally got that little bastard" and slap us with the infraction thingy.

Please dont think im a Zealot and will start holding "Slay the oppressor!!11111" talks, but i do sometimes get the impression the mods get that 'little bit of extra satisfaction' when they catch us with our pants down...

Bahu, i'm naughty too, but i'm naughty in a way that's in the same bed with the coc. Yes i love coc in my bed! We get it.

I've slipped once and i got a three day ban straight up for it, no questions, nada. And it was good. So there's no "ooh i'm gonna get ya" mentality here. Though i do know JubJub loves to spank people :D

Not that i do care a lot, and it's already expired.
But as a general warning for ya all; it seems that writing bad things about Goa is classed as an infraction.
So be aware that Chinese Big Brother is upon ya all xD

Do you have examples of where people have written bad things about Goa and had it censored?

Bearing in mind that infringements that break the CoC will be dealt with so please provide examples that did not break any rules yet where censored.

For your information Goa have had absolutely NO input into any of the rules on these forums, they have been written by the founders and the mods. Simple fact.

Deebs, a month or so back all the soloer's on dyvett were fighting around crauch, dueling ect no bot's no RP farming just respecting 1v1's ect an the GM's (req i think) spawned mobs to kill them all an threatened to ban every1 in the area. personaly i dont paly i dont care BUT

alot of people made whine threads on the subject slating GOA for killing what little fun was left in the server an doing nothing to improve it on hinder it ect ect

5-6-7 or so threads were made an all got locked purely because of the subject.

if GOA has no say or power why are threads directed against them constantly locked/deleted?

What a load of bollocks, this place has been great for years as it is but recently I have seen some very silly moderating and now we get an 'infractions' system. What next? No swearing because kids might be reading? No references to sex or pornography? We have already seen stupidity reigning supreme with the closure of threads discussing how to set up Utorrent, no illegal links were posted and Utorrent has 100% legal uses but still the threads get closed.

Deebs, if you read this please please please don't let the politically correct brigade take over FreddysHouse or influence it's direction. These forums have a been a haven of sanity and humour to it's many loyal members for years and changes like this combined with some silly moderating are only going to do damage.

Im so glad I didnt post a picture of a Korean with a gun saying "Which way to Virginia Tech" or a picture of Gary Glitter with the quote, "I've got Maddie, lol!"

I would have been hit with the banstick so hard :(
