It's caused by a valve in your stomach not stopping stomach acid from rising back up through it AND by acid refluxes(acid rising when it shouldn't). If you only have one of these two things, generally you wont get heartburn. If you just have stomach acid refluxes you can get stomach ulcars afaik but it's only when both happen together that you get 'heartburn' or 'indigestion' as it's sometimes referred to (correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know, they're the same thing).
It's a pretty common thing happening to one in three people during their life time but generally only happens to old people. That's not to say it isn't common between younger people too though.
It feels as though someone breifly lights a match in your chest where your heart is (more central though) hence its nickname of heartburn even though it's nothing to do with your heart.
Can be brought on by stress, continued bad diet as well as lack of exercise when done in conjuction with things like eating too fast.
Hope that clears it up![]()
I thought indigestion was when you really need to have a sit on the can, but nothing comes - causing pain in the stomach. That's why i suggested proons!
If it's the same as heartburn, then yeah, milk would help temporarily, but the long term solution is a better diet and more exercise.
