People who work at SETI strongly believe we will find intelligent alien lifeforms within the next 20 years. They have found similar planets to earth in neighbouring galaxies

What an amazing thing to happen in our lifetime

What does intelligent mean? And I fail to see how they can say that there is intelligent life in a planet that they know nothing of except that its as warm as the earth and it has water. (And perhaps some other similar things)

i'll rephrase the topic, people at seti believe they need more funding, so they make a dodgy claim, i firmly believe that leeds united are going to win the champions league within the next 20 years, and lets face it, theres more chance of aliens being found that that happening, so i will be donating my 2p to the seti foundation toute suite..

oh and cancer research say they are "close" to curing AIDS :p

Curing aids, curing cancer, finding aliens, aliens invading, teleporting, flying cars...hell, anything possible as i just listened to a good song by Britney Spears.

That they´re not playing WoW.

I'd rep you, for that is class, but i can't as i haven't spread myself around enough.

Its more to do with the technology they have. They can now search even further with better technology. They say within 20 years they will be able to pick up any signals from 99% of the universe,

At least thats what the documetary on seti said I watched last week

Lamp did you have your smoking jacket and cravat on when you said that by any chance lol?

i dont think it matters if they find life on another planet whether its smart or not, just the fact that they find something would be pretty darned cool tbh.

well just so long as its not like an evil, murdering, brain mushing-then drinking, chest incubationing then bursting, mind reading super genious. i cba with them tbh.

its odd that there could not be other life.
but then think of the universes that occurred before ours, did life exist like now? if so how far did it progress etc.

Water is the building block of all life. As a general rule of thumb, if there was a sun, the same size as ours, for a planet to harbour life, it must be the same distance as the earth or mars is from ours. Any closer the planet will be too hot, any further away too cold. So, because the universe is so big, there will be thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of planets similar to ours. Then you need the exact same chemical reactions to occur, which, scientists believe are pretty likely. (this isnt always the case however, as life can live in extreme conditions, there is an insect that can withstand temps of 400c down to the coldest possible temp of something like minus 200. However, I seriously doubt that non insects could withstand this, but you never know)

I truly believe that at some point there was life on mars, wether it was intelligent, we will never know.

Ofcourse Marc, one can make those assumptions based on "if they are intelligent like us".

Some arachnid race(yes f*cking startship troopers) could easily live out there too, in hotter situations.

Now opposable thumb thing? Well, whos' to say an intelligent arachnid species couldn't learn to make a glove like hammer or some such.

I'm just saying, it's a big place, and i'm betting almost anything one can imagine(even the teapot orbiting uranus) is out there in one way or the other.

They are obviously talking about Spore, when it's released NASA will shift its focus from looking for actual life to creating artificial life in another galaxy.
