I'm flying off to yummy New Zealand for a month of chilling, drinking beer and chasing sheep. Parachuting and bungee jumping may also occur. My (road) journey will cover both the north and south islands, and my primary goal is to fill my brain with as much beautiful nature input as possible, along with visiting any nightlife hotspots if there are such things there :)

Has anyone here been there? Are there things I really shouldn't miss? I have a reasonably flexible route layed out, but am willing to go out of my way for something really cool.

One of the guys I work with is from there he says

"Franz joseph glacier is apparently good for snowboarding, mount cook also where you can get helicopter rides to the top and get dropped off. Queens town is apparently very popular for skiing, also with bungee jumping! Rotorua is good if you like bad smells, geysers and volcanic acticity like stuff, mount ruapeahu or something is the most active volcano in the world, and you can ski on it!!??

You also need to visit Milford Sound, near queenstown he just showed me a website of it and it looked amazing! Its some kind of flying tour thing, you should check it out. Also marlborough sounds you need to check out too. Lake taupo is a really big lake you should visit. He says there are loads of other cool places but those are some really good ones."

I lived in Rotorua for 2 years and loved it. Plenty of nature and the nightlife is interesting..especially outside of Wellington and Auckland.

Are you on a tour bus or driving yourself?

In regards to the north island..

Go to a Maori village in Rotorua.
Go Rafting (although you can do that down south as well)
Taupo is a beautiful place, as is the Tauranga penisular.
If you can go north of Auckland..its pretty amazing up there.

also...you will meet more people staying in the backpacker's, plus get more ideas of what to do.

There is generally 1-2 large backpackers places in every town..usually a lot more.

driving myself mate: we're going to have a camper. I'm a bit scared at driving on the wrong side of the road though

rafting and the mountain tours will certainly be done though, along with some parachuting. I'll be seeing where my path takes me.

also, I've heard that there are certain parts of NZ where the maori locals don't particularly appreciate tourists. is that true? I'm going there to have fun, not to upset people by accident.

I went to New Zealand, many years ago when I were a lad. We had family who lived there, a town called Palmerston North. I can agree that Rotorua is a place not to be missed, but be aware it smells :). The big mountain in the middle of the North Island was good as well (forgot its name :()
We managed to spend an evening getting pissed with some Maoris in a cattle Byre, that was an experience. We were invited so it was not a problem, the only place that was kind of off limits was the big Long House type place, it had some religious significance and non Maoris were not terribly welcome. We also went to Wanganui on the coast seemed to be a good place will probably be a bit nicer a this time of year, we went in June/July when it is teh cold in NZ.
Hell of a nice place and pretty friendly people, you will enjoy yourself.

Have fun, think of the poor souls that have only had 1 holiday in the last 5 years while you're sunning yourself up in the land of lushness.

And wear a kilt - the sheep can hear a zipper from quarter of a mile.

Go to Marlborough. Best wine in the known universe. Villa Maria... Mmmm.... Please also bring me back a pet Maouri so I can make him dance for entertainment.
