OK here's the situation... one of my house mates has gone a bit insane recently (read: completely loopy), the problem is i was supposed to be living with this guy next year, he has been giving a warning by the uni that he has until monday to decide if he is going to drop out of uni, retake the year or resit all his exams for this year at the same time...

this crazy behaviour (extremely violent rages, takes it out on furniture alot and random people if on nights out) has put me off living with him big time, the other two people we were going to live with have also told me that they dont want to live with him anymore... the problem being that if we tell him that we dont want to live with him he'll probably drop out/go crazy if we wait until he does decide to stay he might go even more crazy...

what the hell am i supposed to do in a situation like this? (the other two are girls who are also kinda scared of him now so it kinda falls to me because they wont even speak to him)

Try and find out why hes acting that way and talk to him about it. If you were truly a mate you would try and help him rather then abandoning him. (dont know how well you know the guy)

the problem is ive been trying to talk to him for the last year, he wont talk to anyone about it and when you ask him why he's upset/angry he just lashes out violently or dissapears (he went missing for about a week at haloween)

I think its time you come to terms with the possibility he *might* be a superhero.

But seriously if i were you i'd do my best to help him and explain how if he doesn't change his behavior he will have to find a place of his own. If he reacts badly after that you can tell him where to stick it, at least you know you tried.

isnt it obvious. if hes a nutter, you dont live with him.

living with a nutter really decreases your chances of safety in your home.

find someone with a stable mind.

drop him a barbiturate, explain the situation and get the hell out of there. he will be able to hear what you told him but wont be able to move to beat you up.

Tris if you were acting mentally unstable would you want your friends to just abandon you?

A few months back i was going through a real rough patch. Steve Irwin had just died and as much as i hate to admit it... i starting listening to My Chemical Romance. My friends all staged and intervention and now im past it.

he didnt mention they are really friends, just house mates. people can be house mates without giving a fuck about each other.

if hes just a guy who happens to live in my house, tie him down and ditch the mofo. before he throws a sofa at you or something.

i lived with him last year in halls, but didnt know him that well, gotten to know him abit better now and dont particularly want to live with him, ive managed to get on ok with him most of the time other times hes annoyed the hell out of me, the only reason i was going to live with him next year was because the other two wanted to live with him, but since they are now scared of him....

Frame him for murder then you wont have to deal with him for 20-25 years. Maybe a bit OTT thou.

what the hell am i supposed to do in a situation like this? (the other two are girls who are also kinda scared of him now so it kinda falls to me because they wont even speak to him)

Exact same thing happened to my brother in his second year at Sheffield, a guy he got on really well with for 18 months suddenly had some kind of break down and started having violent rages where he would damage property and others. In the end the Uni kicked him because he just wasn't doing the work or conducting himself properly on Uni property or towards staff. He hung around the student house for 3 weeks after the Uni got rid of him, he caused mayhem for the other 5 students and litterly kept them awake every night for a week. In the end my brother snapped and they got into a fight, the police were called and luckily for my brother the other students backed my brother up and said he was just defending himself.

My brother didn't press charges on the understanding that the other guy would arrange for his stuff to be collected and would not return to the house. 3 nights later the guy came around banging on the door, the students would not let him in so he got a newspaper and set it on fire then posted it through the door. They called the police and put the fire out, the police arrived 4 hours later and he was long gone. A month later we found out that they had tracked him down living in a student house in Nottingham with some college friends, he had started to cause mayhem there as well and had battered some guy and his girlfriend to a pulp in Nottingham town centre the previous Friday night. Last we heard he got 18 months for the assaults and bugger all for trying burn 5 students to death, takes the piss.

My brother was talking to me about all this recently and it seems that the guy was under alot of stress from the workload, started hammering the pro-plus pills and then would hit the booze real hard at any point where he had no work to do. We reckon the guy had some sort of breakdown where he lost all inhibitions and any sense of morality litterly to the point where he was capable of murder.

Anyway, I am not telling you all that to scare you but I am trying to make a point. Someone needs to confront him now, either all the students in the house together or his family. If this carries on he is going to seriously hurt someone or himself before long. You need this guy out of the house regardless, you can't put up with violent behaviour and even more so when you are trying to study. All I can suggest is you get together with your housemates and try to come to a consensus on how to proceed, contacting his family might be a good idea but also I would suggest speaking to someone at University as well and try to get some help from them.

Tell him to get help or you wont live with him simple as. If he doesnt get help, just tell him you arent going to live with him. He may beat you up, but the way I see it, everyone takes a beating at some point in their lives and it would be worth it just to get the hell away from him.

Wait until he decides whether to stay at uni or not. If he decides to stay you're just going to have to come clean and tell him but make sure it's in a relaxed manner. There is NO way i would live with someone i don't trust, there is so much shit that can go wrong with living in a house with good friends, let alone someone who is losing his grasp on reality.

Either that or leave the country so he can't find you.
