never imported anything before, but there's this product i want from an american company... value $150 (£96)

what would i get hit for by customs and excise? one assumes VAT @ 17.5%? anything else? if so what? and how much?

shipping is gonna be $30 (£20!!!)

see i can get aforementioned product in the uk for £164 inc. delivery and VAT... so is it really gonna be worth importing?

You'd get hit with C&E duty, at 17.5%. And VAT, again at 17.5%.

I think.

its a good idea if you happen to be in the states and you can get it through customs.

I got a bike for nearly a £1000 less in the us than here. I took an old shit thing in a bike box, got me new one over there, rode it around a bit, so it didnt look real clean and shiney, then junked the old shit and brought the new one in the box.

All customs know is that a bike went out, and a bike came back.;) (despite the fact that it weighed 20lbs lss than the old one)

what the fuck?

so i'd have to pay £96 for the "item" £20 to have it delivered, when it gets here have 35% added on top which is erm, £33 quid say
JESUS. it's a wonder we don't have trade embargoes of the US!

You won't pay 17.5% duty, sorry. Duty varies depending on the item, but reckon on a couple of percent. If you get them to say it's worth, say, £50 on the docs, then you prolly won't get charged anything, not even the vat. But if it gets lost you can only prolly claim £50 back.

Hmmm

right, having read that document meg links to (ty meg) my read on it is this;

charges applicable for item;
-import duty (3.5%).
-vat (17.5%).

import duty charged on total cost of item inc. postage

vat charged on above sub-total

so;

£96 + £20 postage
------------------------
£116

add duty;

£116 + 3.5%
----------------
£120.06

add vat;

£120.06 + 17.5%
----------------------
£141.07

total cost : £141.

yes? no? maybe?

Fully depends on if you're happy enough to pay about 49% extra above its cost to have it delivered.

heh

THANK YOU MUNKEY, that will be all.

yeh it's a torch.

Surefire M2 Millenium Centurion tactical flashlight.

aircraft grade aluminium
5.5" long, 1" diameter, 5.5 ounces inc. batteries
65 lumens of light output for 60 mins, or 120 lumens for 20 mins, from 2 * CR123A batteries...
waterproof to 120 feet, pyrex lens, can keep batteries in it for ten years, and it won't deplete their charge...

in short, a very fucking good torch :p that's waaaaay worth it, compared to what i spend on my maglite.

it is apparently possible to get it past customs without payin all the extra charges, if you can get the company you're buyin from to mark it's value as a lot lower than it really is (ie show it as about £20) and/or mark it as a gift you can get away without paying extra.
I know people who have bought airsoft equipment from hong kong have got suppliers to do this and got away with not paying the extra charges, but I've never tried it myself.

yeh

but that's a common thing in the airsoft community... where you buy things through suppliers like redwolf and dentrinity... this is buying something direct from the manufacturer. they won't do it :(
