Impending food crisis?

Interesting article on the Guardian website...already noticing an increase in food prices, will be useful to watch how this develops over the next couple of years...

One reason the food price went up is the euro also, it pumped the prices up and as such, ripple effected the whole world.

Just because people noticed that they can take out more cash from people since everything "seemed" cheaper.

Heck, a public toilet usually worked with about 50 cents(old finnish), which is about 1/6th of a euro. Now it's around a euro. So the increase isn't "big" if you look at it, but it's actually a 600% increase.

Similar thing happened with most the groceries.

Interesting article, were already starting to see the effect with meat prices rising in the UK. Interesting what they were saying about the water tables aswell, could have a major impact in a few years as the water tables become depleted in those areas.

Well not all food prices went up 600%, that was an extreme sample of prices around that went up, but certainly went up a "bit". And as everything goes up "an acceptable bit", it amounts to a lot.

Wages remained(suprise suprise) exactly the same.

Doesnt help with all the influx of new people, plus those pesky Spaniards stealing all Britain's fish.

Britain used to be able to live off itself, we used to have oil, coal, food etc.

Plus you have China grasping for food too, they cannot sustain thier population

Britain hasn't been self-sustaining since well before WWII, and got masses of food and fuel aid from the US during the war and in the post war period.

I think essentially the problem is that we're overconsuming as humanity - if everyone lived like we do in the UK, we would need 3 and a half "earths" to sustain our consumption. This isn't a huge problem when its only a small proportion of the earth's population, but now China and India are aping Western lifestyles, and even simple things like eating meat-based food rather than vegetable-based food means that everything is taking a LOT more resources.

It really will be interesting to see how this pans out over the next few decades - people are treating it in the same way as they treat global warming - i.e. I'm not sure I believe it, and it probably won't affect me anyway, but I think the effects will be very tangible, very soon.

Well it's the same as in the 50s' etc.

"Oh let's burn some fuel and atmosphere test 5 million nukes, it'll be fine!!"

The ozones gone.

"Oh...oops. Well, now we know better!"

"Mighty fine! It's not like ENGLAND/(add own country) will run out of food, hahahaaa."

That article reminds me why I never read The Guardian when I've not been awake long - the sentences are frickin' enormous.

i noticed in tesco a lot of stuff is going up in price. about 3 weeks ago turkey breasts were at least £2 cheaper per kilo than chicken, now its the same.

and their cartons of 15 eggs have gone form £1 to £1.20 within a week!
