I understand you have to wire these things into your immersion switch to get them to function.

Can I heckle my energy supplier to do this? I don't want to be calling out an electrician as no doubt the cost will suck big time.

My immersion switch is in the kitchen and heats the water for both the bathroom & the kitchen. I read that if you put it on for 3 hours during the night when it's cheap, it should last up to about the early evening.

Has anyone managed to install one of them their selves before?

Your energy supplier or rather your local DNO won't do it for you as anything past your meter and cut out is your responsibility. You'll have to contact an electrician or in this case more appropriately a heating engineer.

i put mine on for 2 hours between 4-6am and gets me a bath at night.

dont use it in dribs and drabs though, it fils up with cold water when you empty any of it. so youl lose heat that way.
