The IMDB top anything is about the least reliable guide to good films ever tbh.

I find IMDB more reliable, than some random review in the newspaper/internet.

Seven Samurai

I know this is a masterpiece from the 50's, but do you actually still enjoy watching it? or have you just listed it because it needs to be there? :)

Agreed with Wonk. The IMDB is pretty good actually, I find most of my top movies up in their rankings.

and back on topic.

top 8 here :) I had a hard time finding two more. I've watched many of them, however those that stands out for me, are appearently crap :( They're in no particulary order, and I've tried to find the movies I enjoyed the most. Not the best ones compared to the time they were made.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Cidade de Deus (2002) <--- City of god
Se7en (1995)
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Léon (1994)
Saving Private Ryan (1998)

I've watched it a lot.
I love watching it probably once every 2-3 years or so.

hehe, alright. There's something special about old movies. I have to admit that I had a hard time getting through Seven Samurai and Casablanca though.

ECA, out of the ten films you have not yet seen, you need to watch 9 because they are great. Don't worry if you don't see Donnie Darko though, it was over hyped and not that good or clever.

I haven't seen Schindlers List and I thought Requiem for a Dream was a god awful film, boring self pitying shit that used a double ended dildo to make the headlines.

Donnie Darko ftw!

Schnidlers List was incredible at the time it was made but the effect will be diluted by now as so many shit adverts/ crap movies have used it.

It is however, an incredibly moving and powerful film (barring the over acted end by LN). I found it very hard to watch. It was one of those that you say "don't worry it's just a movie" then realise that it isn't "just" a movie.

American history X is fantastic too. Very very powerful film and would and perhaps should have recieved more praise than it did at the time.

They're the two that immediately hit me as being films that really moved me. Sixth Sense is one of the most entertaining films I've ever seen - I loved it.

What a terrible list it doesn't even have Akira on there or the original Italian Job. Everybody knows the best disney film is Robin Hood and thats not on there and no nightmare before Xmas or Muppets christmas carol. Even E4's list of best movies is better than that. I know Labyrinth wouldn't be on there but its worth a mention of one of my fav films. I think Sin City should have been higher as well as 300 and maybe Battle over the River Plate don't know why I love that film and when eagles dare. Sorry for the mini rant.

Hold on now, this is not a list made some critic somewhere, or by "experts". It is a list voted for by the users of imdb. Now it may not be to your taste, but it shows what films are popular with the majority.

To be honest I clicked on the link, saw that Shawshank was number 1 then promptly closed the window again. What an amazingly tedious pile of tosh that was. In fact I've just named it in the 5 worst films I'd ever seen on Facebook. So there.

The defacto top 10 filums in the worldest are

1) Die Hard
2) The Big Lebowski
3) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
4) Apocalypse Now
5) 2001
6) V for Vendetta
7) Dr Strangelove
8) Happy Gilmore
9) Super Troopers
10) Airplane!

Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

Top 10 films I haven't seen (in order from 1 down):

The Godfather
The Godfather Part II
The Dark Knight
12 Angry Men
Once Upon a Time in the West
Sunset Boulevard
North By Northwest
Lawrence of Arabia
WALL-E
Paths of Glory

That list is terrible though. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind is better than Raging Bull apparently. Says it all.

Saying Shawshank Redemption is bad should be classed as a crime!

23 on that list I haven't seen, none that I haven't seen that I particularly want to, except La Dolce Vita, which I sort of half watched once.

As for my top ten (in no particular order):

Empire Strikes Back
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly,
LA Confidential
Goodfellas
Das Boot
Life of Brian
The Great Escape
The Princess Bride
Blade Runner
Kind Hearts & Coronets

As with any list or "top whatever" as per votes or sales though, it reflects taste and trends that will have faded or changed drastically by the next day. The very same reason that we end up with shit like Lady GaGa and Crazy Frog at #1 in the pop charts.
Take, for instance, the Star Trek (2009) entry. At the time of publishing, I doubt that many people had seen it. Therefore like many other entries on that list, there's a huge likeliness that many of the numbers are bollocks - people rating films they've not actually seen.

Schindlers List is a hugely emotional film, probably the most moving peices of cinema I've ever watched, and don't think I could ever be that moved again. Very well made and the bit in the back of your mind that is always making you think "this actually happened" just exasperates the emotion.

Donnie Darko is a very clever film IMO, definitely worth watching. If you've never seen it before, it's certainly very "WTF" though :)

Surprised to see Bladerunner and Back to the Future that low.

Nah it is overhyped. It's good, but nothing special. Soundtrack wins though.

I didn't see the attraction in Donnie Darko; it's an arty film, if you're not an arty person then you'll walk away thinking "emmm ok".

Bladerunner is such a masterpiece.

Its turd, boring fancy turd.

Its very good and was needed at the time, films were boring, Donnie Darko was different for once.

Its meant to get you thinking, so not arty. Damn you Big G don't make me hurt you in a loving way

The blu-ray version of Bladerunner is an excellent conversion; the picture is absolutely crisp and clean for an old film.
