My lady's forced me to come here and tell of my heroism.

I got home tonight after a 3 day course and a 2.5 hr drive from Milton Keynes to a very big hug. The next thing on the agenda was to fix two computers in the house that were going wonky.
One was a housemate's computer who had got his share settings all in a muddle meaning others could access one file and not another, even if they were in the same directory. So after a bit of prodding. I set him straight on that and now everyone can leech his pr0n. :)

My bird's computer was a little more involved. After getting a util off symantec that said the computer was not infected, I studied the emails more closely and the only thing I can come up with is that they're a hoax or, that someone plonker had got some bulk mailer and pretended to be lil old Damini. either way, I tried everything that the webby suggested and more and couldn't find any sign of this virus so it seems that the panic is over.

I have since left her computer downloading all the critical updates that Micro$haft are providing just to prevent anything happening in the future.

Panic over. Mission sucess. Case closed.

 Yay me! ;)

*edit: The good news forme after all this is that my THIRD replacement monitor from Taxan has now started to go a little flickery. Great. I used to believe in Karma.....

LOL. I forgot to turn her (out-dated) virus scanner off as windows installed the critical updates and it threw up a virus warning. Heh. She came running down the stairs flapping her little arms.
I forgot that some critical updates have that effect on virus scanners until now. :)
You should have seen the look on her little face, and after I'd told her not to worry as her computer wasn't infected. heh.

"oh, and just one more thing..." says Mr Columbo.

I still don't get it. It makes my eye twitch thinking about it. In my junkmail was an e-mail from *me*, sending *me* this virus. And why were the other e-mail addresses it sent to so randomly picked? My e-mail address has to be the source cos it can't be the way the virus spreads by sending you an e-mail saying THIS ATTACHMENT IS A VIRUS. Not even I opened that attachment, and I do stupid stuff on a minute by minute basis. Kenny has just taken all this in his stride but I feel like I'm in that scene from Scanners trying to figure it all out. And is whoever used my e-mail account name going to keep using it for the forces of darkness? Will this madness ever end?

Well, my Knights came through in the end. The evil has been quashed and Im grateful to you all.

My (meagre) three years in IT has taught me that when its over just leave it. Too many questions and a determination to get to the bottom of everything just results in out-of-hours stress and an ability to never get things done.

You're clean and that's all that matters. Other stuff can be dealt with if and when it comes up.

Now what's my next logged call..?

If its like our place it will probably involve

  • Word
  • Half a trillion pictures
  • Tables
  • a HP Printer

Or

"I've gone into word clicked on open gone to the right folder thingy but can't find my spreadsheet"

I think I'm gonna have to invent a matrix style chair that staff sit in, I then shove a spike into their brain and upload a clue on how to use PC's :/

People can learn a foreign language (exc. me) but can't get to grips with something soooo simple.

Some peeps at our place don't even grasp the concept of files and folders on a computer.

Aha! It used to be, but now I'm a server/infrastructure bloke so it's more likely to be
  • I've deleted all my network files. Can you restore them?
  • This Exchange server isn't replicating with that one
  • I need to access so-and-so's mailbox
  • My son's PC has a virus. What are you going to do about it?
  • SQL 7.0 is b0rked
  • IIS 4.0 is b0rked
  • The Intranet is down!!!""!!!
  • Robin, think of new ingenious ways to make space on the Exchange cluster even though we won't approve your detailed and beautifully crafted plan to reduce and limit mailbox sizes
I reached the conclusion that the public/customers/clients/management are all thick bastards.

Think that's bad?

The most frequent question I get asked in my place is:

Double-click with the right or left button on the mouse?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, well I've phoned you bastards on tech support before, and I have discovered you all seem to have the most incomprehensible accents in the world. I think it's a deliberate ploy to make you spend longer on the phone.

Damini: Hi, yeah, I'm trying to install this thingy on my computer and its caught in a perpetual loop of resetting itself

Extrememly Irish Woman: Ahh, well, what I'll be needing you do is go into start, run, mfconfig

Damini: Its not finding that

E I W: Its not??

Damini: Nope

E I W: M F C O N F I G

Damini: Yup, yup, M for marigolds, F for Funulah....

E I W: No, no, F for snake

Damini: You don't spell snake with an F?!?

E I W: Not f, F!!

And so it went on. Of course, if I hadn't been the irratating non computer user, I'd have known it was *M*icro *S*oft, not Micro Foft, but dammit. So we are all as evil as each other. And you get paid to be evil.
