for the last 2 weeks i have been recieving tonnes of emails frm a person called Adam Sidel from autoselect@tiscali.co.uk, these are emails contain a virus, In the last 12 hours i have recieved 29 of these blasted things, i have sent abuse emails to tiscali twice but they have done nuttin, what should i do,

i already have the emails being directed to my deleted folder,

as well as filtering them all off to delete, set them to auto-forward BACK to the offender.

they'll soon wonder what is going onand might figure it out - or in the very least, you'll annoy them back a little

chill dudeh, the high-level peeps aren't going to kill him off/contact him till they get lots [ie >1] of complaints about him. don't go sending another email now tho, with >1 I mean more than 1 person heh

If they're infected with a virus then it's prolly that sending itself out to everyone in the guy's address book.

What's the virus called or what's the message subject?

Yes, it happened to me last year. I somehow managed to get hit by the win32.magistr33912.mm (or something like that) virus. I was on dialup then so it could have theoretically been much worse....

What happened was as follows: several lines of text from random .doc files on this computer were pasted into emails and sent off to all addresses in my address book (same goes for my dad, who also has loads of address-book entries). Attatched with them were randomly named .exe files. Of course, I only managed to work this out when I received loads of confusing/abusive messages containing the original content. But, it didn't end there... those who were stupid enough to run the .exe's had their address-book information sent right back to MY machine, so my PC could fling out the virus to hundreds more people!! :mad: And it was all done undercover; no messages were sent visibly through Outlook Express, but the system could detect thousands of bytes worth of outgoing data per second, everytime I was connected.

There were also a few weird things; according to symantec, the virus was supposed to start doing evil things such as deleting files, bringing up abusive messages, screwing up the HD, etc. This never happened to me (all that became infected were a few programs in the system folder), but one of my friends sufferred badly from it, as did other people he knew, whom I had no contact whatsoever with. It appears this system acted as a 'carrier', say... the equivalent of being merely HIV postive as opposed to being struck down by AIDS (you get the point...). Also, many of the mails sent slightly altered my user-name (replies went to sich@fortyarden.clara.co.uk as opposed to rich), so the online general mailbox was clogged up big-time.

I tried running McAfee several times and it was apparently successful in cleaning the system, but noooo... it lied. And then there was Norton... aahhhh. Almost crashed the system with excessive virus reports but got everything sorted out fine and dandy. It also auto-updates regularly and catches any buggers before they hit the bullseye. I'd mail back this person and recommend they get it :p

Fair enough. I was lucky a few weeks ago. Got hold of a .vbs-type virus and Outlook 2002 said 'An application has attempted to access your Outlook Address Book and I've told it fuck off' or similar. Gave me time to update meh software and clean the system.

I was quite relieved. Broadband peeps could be sending out thousands of emails and never notice.

I haven't had a virus on any of my machines in about 6 years. Added to which, I use a periodic scanner (non-active-task-tray type)

i'm just not a fucking retard that clicks on every exe/doc etc file I come across

I managed to install Prettypark.exe on the uni computer, which made me a very popular student. I got an e-mail from my mate Welby, and since he's a computer technician and was working on a website with me I thought nothing of it (was also in the days before I realised exe = Danger Will Robinson). It was quite clever I suppose (by my levels), because it came through outlook it just filled in the blanks from the info in outlook to make a letter. Dear ..... (recepient name) I found this, it's pretty cool. Thought it may be worth a look. Let me know what you think (sender). So I clicked on it happy as larry, and then realised the next e-mail in my inbox had the subject heading "ARRGH! DON'T OPEN LAST E-MAIL! DANGER!!!!". Doh...

So the next day, to avoid the pissed off computer technicians wearing the "Dont download exe's!!" t-shirts, I used my mates laptop to write an essay, saved it to disk, popped up there to print it in disguise... and lo and behold, apparently I bought a macro virus with me from her computer on the disk, whatever the hell that might be. So two days in a row I became the anti christ of the computing service.

To quote Perplex, I was the fucking retard that clicked on every exe I came across. The uni has beaten this naivety out of me with big pointy sticks.

My housemate managed to get a mystery phone number billed at £14 last time round. Turns out he was dumb enough to click on some nasty porn site that reconnected. On MY bloody computer while I was out... Not quite a virus but still one of those dumb things people do with computers. I felt like bleaching my keyboard down...

Have you tried blocking the e-mail address. This worked for me, I kept being sent a Virus e-mail, from the same source, so I blocked it, and it doesn't bother me again.

I'm trying to suppress an early morning eeek here... I don't understand viruses, and I especially don't understand them at 7 in the morning at four hours sleep, but in my hotmail inbox I have four returned mails (bear with me, I still have large hair and puffy eyes so I may not make a load of sense...)

The first is from Postmaster at Sprint saying (mostly in French) I have a failed e-mail, and returns my ALLEGED e-mail with sample.exe (76k) and text9.txt (0kb)

The second one is a return e-mail from Mailer-Daemon@ukr.net regarding the same files as above, followed by a page of numerical bollocks spammage.

Postmaster@iomega.com have written to me twice, firstly just informing me very abruptly I sent an e-mail with a virus, the second naming it as PE_NIMDA.E.

Now, I am a tad green when it comes to these things, but I havent opened any of these attachments, and Im not sure whether this is the virus itself being sent to me or whether I really have it. I may be being really dumb, but since I have no computer knowledge I don't feel that ashamed. I've run Norton, but I'm no longer subscribed so I may well not be as up to date as necessairy, and it didn't find anything.

I don't use Outlook Express, but it is set up on my computer.

Anyone help? Am I being pranked or have I screwed up somewhere?

That's um... strange. Is outlook express set up to recieve/send mail through your hotmail account? If it is then delete the entries for ingoing/outgoing servers (in options somewhere). If you never use it then it can't be much of a problem.

If outlook isn't set up with a hotmail address, then I'm confused. I really can't see how a virus can spread through a web-based inferface like Hotmail.com.

I think it's worth re-subscribing to Norton/Symantec LiveUpdate, to get rid of it and be sure, but I can't see how it could be caused by anything other than a virus, whatever way :/

I've just realised that outlook isn't set up at all to my hotmail account, so I'm really confused. I know outlook is susceptible to these virus types, but yeah, agreeing with you on the hotmail front. Oh dear... If it was just one e-mail address mailing me I'd dismiss it as a hoax, with that being the actual virus, but THREE different e-mail addresses mailing me the same kind of info?? Oh, if only I had a computer brain!!

I've even looked this virus name on Norton virus definitions, and its not there... so surely if it's not there then Norton won't be able to fix it? And can this go through the server and screw up the other computers? Im in such a tizz wazz!

Ok, well I've found the anti virus wotsit now, but have no idea how to run it... So i guess this computer is hibernating until Mr Kenny returns from his training mission.

Oh dear. I go away for a few days and my lady manages to open up the gates of hell and give them full access to her lil puter.
I just had a quick word with her on the phone and i told her where to go to on the symantec site to find a cure/search tool for it.
I can't see exactly how she's got infected cos there's no POP3 accounts set up on her computer. The only thing I can think things might have gone a bit loopy on is via MSN messenger. I guess the scanner will tell though.

Ah well, I'm back from my training course tonight and I'll pop into IRC to find you guys if she's not solved it by then.

ive had this badtrans virus twice at work recently,and i didnt have to open a stupid attatchment or anything.i got an email from a german supplier of ours,i opened the e mail and as i did a message flashed <downloading from internet> VERY quickly indeed and hey presto ,i got a virus.
However i posted on these very forums,was directed by ch3tan to symptec thingy place,i downloaded norton and all was well.
i'd just like to say this is the sort of very helpfull usefull thing i like about bw forums,not some of the crap thats been on here lately :(

Too true. When I read my e-mail this morning you guys were my first thoughts of Knights in shining virtual armour.

I downloaded the tool to get rid of this evil little bastard (even though I'm still not sure if I have it). Step one is download this tool. I'm still stuck on stage two, which is some blah about authenticity of digital signature. And should I solve that, I will be stuck on stage three, which is disabling system restore. Damnation. All I wanted was a big red button that says "Click here to get rid of the virus". So Kenny is going to come home, shaking his head, and have to do it all for me. Oh well.... Thank you all for your help. I'll let you know if I actually had the virus or not...

lol, that's lovely :) you should cherish your slight computer iliteracy D grrleh, a mind unsullied by extreme knowledge of it/tech thingys is a good thing to have around these parts :D
thus Kenny will don his armor and slay the virtual beastie and we of the forums will wield our arcane secrets to the benefit of all :D
