No planes allowed (or minimum ones anyway). I'm trying to do the whole thing with no more than 4-5 flights. I have to fly from Asia to Australia (but I've found an incredibly cheap flight from Singapore to Darwin), then Oz to NZ and NZ to South America (I looked at freighters etc but its ludicrously expensive and takes up too much time).

Around NZ I want to do as much as I can by bus or car; I've found a pretty cheap rv rental place. Transport around NZ and my flight from there to Brazil are the two most expensive bits of the trip.

so drive down to Wellington and get the ferry. you're a car enthusiast, so I can tell you right off that the drive from Picton to Nelson to the Able Tasman national park is *MADE* for a 2 seater tourer

I vote on keeping the blog updated lots and not let it fall into obscurity especially if you grab Wordpress and Gallery2, you can inter-link them with a couple of plug-ins so its easier to insert images into the blog in relevant spots

Would be better to get a flickr account, then you can update it easier, including sending photos from your mobile.

Unfortunately, I've been bad and although I've been living here for over a year I've only managed to get down as far south as Taupo

Been too busy to go further afield - which should change as soon as I start doing cross-countries (and land aways) for my CPL

But yeah, I don't think there's anything to see in Auckland - so get out as soon as you can. Taupo and the Rotorua area is kinda worth seeing, but like TdC says drive down to Welly, jump on the ferry and head over to South Island.

the Coromandel is pretty though, nice drive through tbh. Taupo and Rottenrua are nice but touristy. There are places you can do rafting on on the road away from Taupo with differing companies. I did it with guys called "River Rats". They're nice and you get great sarnies after. Also they have a tattoo'd peirced and uber hot female instructor

Yeah, we did rafting down at Taupo (just south of the lake - can't remember the name of the place tho), was really good as they were only Grade 3 and nothing to demanding for the first time out. We were mostly doing the touristy things down there (float plane around the Rotorua lakes, jet boat, black water rafting at Waitomo etc). Hoping to head down to Sth Island for the skiing next winter, aswell as going back for some more rafting at Taupo this summer.

While in Thailand i recommend taking time to go see the islands of Phi Phi.
