...your prayers have been answered. Nokia have just launched their map service in the App Store, its called HERE Maps, and I've been playing around with it this morning and its excellent. Really fast rendering and search and navigation are top notch. Available for Android too, although there's obviously slightly less reason to jump from Google maps (other than Google being all evil and everything).

That's a shame it looks nice but it's another download the Maps as you go service? Which is no good for me so I will stick with CO Pilot for now.

It has an offline caching mode:

Description

HERE Maps helps you feel like a local anywhere you go. See where you are, search and discover nearby places, and get a feel for the place. Collect places to remember or for later discovery. Explore new destinations and know instantly how to get there on foot, by car or on public transport. HERE Maps is based on the world-class NAVTEQ mapping data used in 90% of in-car navigation systems in the world.

Features:
• Map views – Pick the map you need from map view, live traffic view, public transport line view or satellite view
• Save map areas & wander without data coverage

• In selected countries, access community maps created and updated by users
• Maps, search and place coverage for nearly 200 countries

• Search with history and suggestions
• Share places with just a tap, including the location and how to get there, over SMS, email, or social networks

• Organize places you love into Collections
• Sign in to HERE Maps with your Nokia Account or Facebook login
• Sync with Here.net – Access your Collections anywhere

• Step-by-Step voice-guided walk navigation
• Walk navigation through pedestrian routes, parks, alleyways, and more
• Public transportation and driving directions

well its a good thing because otherwise the amount of data needed to be stored would be huge just for the uk.

Its not actually as huge as you might think it is. For example the google maps offline cache for the entirety of Kent is 59mb.

As its vector graphics it packs up fairly small :)

CoPilot uses 311 MB and if it is a choice between storing 311 MB or needing a map and seeing no signal there is only one winner for me.

Still a fan of google maps, but then again probably as I'm familiar with it. I do find it funny watching someone with IOS devices say Google is evil ;) It's like watching Satan have a pop at Saddam Hussein (insert south park reference here)

My phone is a work phone, Apple are evil as well, but they are conventionally evil (fuckers may as well wear capes and twirl their moustaches); Google on the other hand are a much more insidious kind of evil. Facebook are comedy evil.

It's ok for walk around maps but nothing more imho. Waze beats it into a pulp for sat-nav style maps.

for a limited country or region .. i travel all over the world and to have the whole world stored on my iphone would be impractical so the download for me is better

Google has officially launched Google Maps for iOS. Now no reason not to upgrade to iOS 6. :)
