if you've an nVidia motherboard (nForce chipset of any description) and use Vista - do NOT update your SATA/IDE drivers - especially as part of a windows update.

Doing so makes Vista think you've a whole new computer and kindly deactivates it for you - and no, you can't reactivate it without going through the rigmorole of phoning MS and whinging at them.

Heading back to an illegal copy of XP now - and if MS have something to say about that, they can explain why their activation systems fall for such a big problem?

Tbh i'd not bother using it at all - Vista Basic has nothing of interest - in fact you'd get far more out of XP with one of those vista-lookalike packs with less memory-buggery thrown in for good measure.

Looks like I'll be demoting Vista to a tertiary OS next to Ubuntu and XP again :( At least until SP1. I should *really* have listened to the "stalwarts"

Shame, as it performs so much better :/

When I installed the driver from windows update I had to format and start again, I got stuck in an endless reboot loop. You have to expect things like this early on in a release. Just use a different SATA driver and everything is fine.

I aint touching Vista til SP2 comes out and XP is destroyed by ray guns from space...then I might consider Linux instead anyway. Or maybe make my own OS out of some sticky back sellotape and a couple of cardboard bits outta the bog roll...

evzy - that's quite a good idea re your home build OS however again, it probably won't be fully usable until you add the later-provided washing up bottle ;)

I've always been of the thought that any new MS OS should be put in quarauntine until at least SP1. But having installed Vista Ultimate at the weekend, planning on Dual booting with XP till lit's stable, XP hasn't been loaded up once.

I've had no major compatibility problems so far and any I did have were solved with a quick bit of googling :)

Sounds like you got unlucky how many times have you activated Vista as retail is 5 or 10 activations befor Call Microsoft pops up from what i have seen so far.

I will check if any of our test machine have a NVidia motherboard to see if i can make one fall over. But thanks for the heads up another thing to watch out for :(

why? what makes microsoft so special that they should get away with such a massive screwup?

because they have 90% monopoly on OS's? to me that should mean it would be the other way around. that they SHOULD have a near flawless product upon release. not a late alpha release and then make 2 gigs of bugfixes to SP1/2.....

any other corporation that released something this sloppy would never survive to make something new. but not microsoft, ppl just go "meh, shit happens" no matter what.

My Vista has not come up with an Nvidia nForce upgrade recently.

I have done an update on 17/3/07 for Nvidia but had no problems with it.

Maybe it only affects certain chipsets and not all...

I hope so. This was on a system only installed the day before Vista's official UK launch and only activated that one time.

Heres hoping it doesn't happen too often, it's a pain in the arse trying to convince someone you're not a theiving pirate.

"You pirate, you must buy windows!"
"Ooooh arrrrr, im no pirate you scallywag! I plundered me windows through legal means, oooh arrr"

We all know a product of this size wont be 100% compatible with everything (at least to begin with), its just the way it is.

Heading back to XP tonight.

Quite right, it's daft to expect full support right away - but when you're talking big names like nVidia, Creative, Asus and more struggling to get the drivers made properly with a LOT of community feedback put to them, it's not boding well for the OS in general.

Shame, I'm getting to like the performance of my system with it installed.

Installed Vista last night. Seems to be working fine on my Intel/ATi set up. Pretty impressed so far - no issues installing it and the new toys are ace. Wish I could figure out how to get the RSS reader tot ell me something interesting tho.

Got a new PC with Vista home premium installed. It's nice so far but one hugely annoying bug is that it won't save passwords for Pop3 mail accounts in Outlook 2002 and earlier. They have no plans to fix this because they're no longer supporting Outlook 2002 as of last July. Rather frustrating considering I bought a HTC tytn phone last September which came with Outlook 2002 and I use it to maintain all my contact details, calender etc.

I think I read that the password stuff in old Outlook was not secure and so it was done by design, not sure.
