EVERY psychology student I've ever met (not an astronomical amount but a few) have believed that after 2 months of the course they can successfully analyse every facet of your personality.

i've never tried to analyse anyone. most people aren't interesting enough to want to, even if i was a fully trained psychotherapist (which i'm not!). the fact that when most people find out you are/were a psychology student they think you are analysing everything about them is incredibly entertaining though.
edit: i didn't point out but in a psychology degree you don't learn how to analyse anyone at all. anyone that attempts to analyse someone based on the fact they have a psychology degree is a pretentious twat.

Indeed - I dropped Psychology like a turd-filled-pint once I realised what a non-scientific load of fart most of it was. Loved Neuroscience but the rest was donkey-gay.

Tell that to the 2 physics phd's i know doing desktop support or the chemistry phd i know who is qualified to sell chemistry equipment

tbh I'm inclined to think it's a downside to becoming a specialist. Job availability that is. Just now at lunch I was chatting with some other IT gods, and one's a car mechanic, one is an electro-techy person, one's a physical therapist, one's a goldsmith and I'm a photographer. Ooh, IT degrees abound in IT jobs. Not.

I suppose one can tough it out and wait for a job in one's field (or go to another country etc.) but you should have a wee look at what is available too, or plan on being a career student. I mean, you can have 10 PhD's and be a specialist in rare-earth particle capture faffing, but unless someone at CERN dies you'll never get a job in your field so you'd better brush up on your other skills too so at the least you can quote your lecturer's more witty comments while selling shoes.

Ooh, IT degrees abound in IT jobs. Not.

I don´t actually know anyone working in IT with an IT or Comp. Sci degree. Most people I know seem to be from an Engineering or Bus Studies/Economics background.

Having said that I think Tom is wrong about experience v. qualifications; As someone who went to Uni after working I can tell you now that a degree opens doors that experience alone does not. Yes, of course you can get to the top without a degree, but its a damn sight harder.

Employers for many jobs don´t actually care what your degree is in, its more about showing you have the ability and will to learn. Obviously this is different for the professions, but I´d recommend that unless you want to be a doctor or a lawyer, keep your degree options as general as possible; don´t specialise until you have to.

As for engineering, in this country, its the hardest work for the least reward, and unless you REALLY want to be an engineer, avoid engineering degrees. I know dozens of engineers from my Uni days and I can only think of one who is still in engineering fifteen years later; most never did an engineering-related job at all. If you´re a German, ignore this advice and become an engineer, its the only country in Europe that treats engineering with the respect it deserves.
