For now am having to use itunes as the alternatives do not seem to support the itouch or newer ipods properly.

Fucking thing installs quicktime as part of the package. so irritating.

And this is why I retain the opinion that Apple hardware and software is a load of complete shit.

I side with Sharma on that one.
The mother asked me yesterday evening what software is best for buying music.

"A credit card and a shop" was my reply. She asked about iTunes, but I said I'd not go near her laptop should she decide to irradiate her system with that.

I may be somewhat biased against Apple, but tbh that's mostly because of a certain Apple user I know (not a member of here btw). I asked him where his music was in his applething, and he answered: "in iTunes" and then I said, "no, where is your music; what directory?" and he answered "in iTunes" and then I gave up :(

I'm clearly going to have to change my user title to ‘Apple Apologist’ for this, but bear with me.

I've not heard anything about third party support for the iPhone/iPod Touch yet. They both use entirely new software on the device, so it's probably going to be a while.

Quicktime gets installed because it's the Quicktime libraries which actually handle playing the music and video in iTunes.

The user was a bit slow. /Home/Music is the quite guessable default (albeit then inside an iTunes library folder)

iTunes is divisive, because it's build with very different, philosophical design decisions to other media players. Plus, it's a much better Mac OSX citizen than it is a Windows one. Fundamentally though, as far as Apple's consumer software is concerned, people think in terms of media, not files. Which is how it should be. So, iTunes is a music manager to be used instead of the file manager. It names your files for you (reasonably: Artist/Album/Track.ext) and puts them somewhere sensible (~/Music), but all your interaction is going to be through iTunes anyway, so it's designed not to matter.

iTunes provides better means of interacting with music than a file browser. It exposes the metadata in a way that would grind a file browser into UI bloat hell (Hi, Windows Explorer).

Having a dedicated browser/manager for complex, metadata based data like music and video and photos (iPhoto) creates a better user experience than having substandard management capabilities in the generic file system browser, and a better experience than trying to shoehorn comprehensive capabilities into a generic browser.

iTunes also has fundamental behaviours that link it back into the system and keep it behaving like a specialist browser, rather than an application: Right click a file and choose ‘Show in Finder‘; you get the generic system browser for the file, but you can also drag files out; synonymous with any other file browser window. So dragging something presented as music seamlessly comes out the other side as a file. People might not appreciate you can do that. It's handy.

It's why the Winamp generation hated it so much at first (or, still do). Because iTunes declares that managing music as files is rubbish and stupid, and you should just manage it as music instead. If you're a control freak (I don't mean that as derogatory) then iTunes is going to cause you a problem. But I let go once I found that I enjoyed the user experience of working with music rather than files to be so, so much better.

Using iTunes to its full potentially removes the need to manage the music files at a lower level. Or at least, that's the plan. So far as making computers Less Crap™ goes, it's a good plan.

Which doesn't change the fact that if you don't like it and want an iPod Touch, you're boned. But at least now you know what's boning you.

in defense of my friend, I'm not entirely sure he knows that under the UI there are things as files and directories and stuff. also, I'm seriously considering getting a macbook, so I may suddenly start evangelizing ;)

Having been forced to use it for a few days now, I am not as pissed off as I was. Lots of niggles, and the annoyance of quicktime (but hell it could have been worse, imagine if I had had to install realplayer for something!). But what Shovel said is right, it lets you just manage your music and not worry about files. Which actually suits me just fine.

It's that false sense of security he lulls you into. Atfer all if you can't trust a man of the cloth, who can you trust?
