I've tried installing IE 7 but right at the end I get a box appear saying it can't install.

After searching around I've tried
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926716/ (installing went further when this option was unticked)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925 (no joy)
Closing down all anti spyware / virus / software firewalls

The ie7.log shows:
137.468: DoRegistryUpdates:UpdSpInstallFromInfSection Failed for ProductInstall.GlobalRegistryChanges.Install error: 0x5
137.468: INF_REGISTRY Failed
137.468: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed
137.778: Access is denied.
137.778: Internet Explorer 7 installation did not complete.

Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made.
137.788: Starting process: C:\WINDOWS\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe /~ -q -z
210.202: Software Update Rollback has completed with return code 0xbc2. This rollback requires a reboot.
210.202: Internet Explorer 7 installation did not complete.

Internet Explorer 7 has been partially updated and may not work properly.
210.202: Update.exe extended error code = 0x5

The only problem I can see with IE6 is I am unable to change my home page. I tried via the registry, but get access denied. Could this cause a problem?

Any help would be appreciated after 3 hours of tweaking it still won't install :(

Although apparantly installing FF2.0 blats and corrupts your bookmarks, which is nice!

Access denied in the registry sounds a bit interesting. Check your registry isn't b0rked, I'm sure there are tools to do that.

You got access denied manually editing the registry? Are you logging in under the local machines administrative account - if not the do so.

Also if that doesnt work, for some reason your registry permissions may of got changed. Reset the registry permissions at the root of each HKEY, ensuring you check 'replace permission entries on all child ...'. Note that you may have to take ownership first.

Oh, playing with the registry is dangerous, if it fubars your PC i'm not responsible etc etc. ;)

The install worked perfectly for me.

(I realise this is of no help whatsoever)
