IE6 Encoding

Every now and then I come across a site where the '£' (pound) sign appears as a sort of 'A' with squiggles in it.

if I change the encoding it shows it ok, but of course reappears on the next page etc.

Is this normal, and if not how can I fix it?

At the moment I have encoding set to Auto-Select.

I believe that happens when the page is encoded in unicode and you're viewing in ascii (Might be visa versa). As for fixing the problem, I have no idea.

Go to View -> Encoding, and try removing the tick from Auto-Select. :)

I've actually tried that... no joy. All that happens is that I get more pages with errors.

It seems like the autoselect is working most, but not all, of the time.

Could you link us to the site in question? (unless it's not suitable ;))

This does not help you at all but it works fine for me.

Hi Sowat

If you choose to use Unicode (UTF-8) ('View' > 'Encoding') then many of these problems should be solved. Sadly this solution isn't ideal, but hopefully it will work.

Kind Regards

That seems to be the best compromise Jonty, so I'll stick with that.

Funny thing is, it happens sometimes in emails too (mainly ones from The Register). Looks like it may be a system setting rather than an IE one.
