Please excuse me. It's a little thing for my college work you could all help me with if you're willing :) Any help with grammatical errors is also welcome as this is for a Language and Communication Unit. Here goes..

This is a questionnaire on computers within secondary schools, how they're used and how they benefit everyone has benefitted from them. If there wasn't any computers in your school, or even if there wasn't schools in your days this questionnaire is not for you. You can have a rest. The same goes for those of you who haven't started secondary school yet..

As for the rest of you, please try and fill in the form as best you can. The numbers do not have to be exact. Your nearest estimate is helpful to. And finally, thankyou for taking your time to get even this far.

What year did you or will you finish secondary school?

How many computers were there in your school?

How many students were there in your school?

Did or does your school have a Local Area Network?
Yes/No/Don't know (delete as appropriate)

Did or does your school have internet access?
Yes/No/Don't know (delete as appropriate)

Which of these subjects were/are computers used in the most?
English/Mathematics/Sciences/Humanities/Arts and Technology/Foreign Languages (delete as appropriate)

How were the computer used in this subject?

What programs did you use the most overall in secondary school?

Do you feel your education benefitted from the ICT facilities in your school?
Yes/No (delete as appropriate)

Explain your answer.

What programs did you use the most overall in secondary school?
3ds max and AutoCAD

Do you feel your education benefitted from the ICT facilities in your school?
Yes/No (delete as appropriate)
Yes

Explain your answer.
firstly I would never have had the oportunity to hear my teacher mispronounce the english keywords that the differing proggys used. secondly I discovered that I loved 3ds so I bought a 66MHz Cyrix DX2 based system with 4MB ram and a 400MB disk to run it at home on a student grant. I ran it exactly once, then wiped it off the disk, installed Doom and sold my soul to the gaming gods.

My school was very foreward-looking with regard to IT and its use in all subjects by both staff and pupils - the technology being embraced by the Art/Music departments in particular. I was already interested in computers/electronics and I had both the luxuries of excellent facilities and very good teachers. I learned a great deal.

just realized: the international school that I went to in Indonesia between 1977 and 1985 actually had two computers, Apple IIe's. the primary school I went to in England (1985-1985) and holland (1985-1988), the secondary school (1988-2002) had none. at least none that the students used. by the time I encountered an IBM-PC in school I'd already owned several "home" computers a la msx, C64, Amiga, etc.

Around 1100

Did or does your school have a Local Area Network?
Yes

Did or does your school have internet access?
Yes

Which of these subjects were/are computers used in the most?
Mathematics/Sciences/Foreign Languages

Yes ICT is/was a seperate subject.

How were the computer used in this subject?
Maths - Never used the computers in maths, not once, unless the interactive whiteboard counts. That would be to draw graphs. Lower sets tended to use the computers so i can't really comment but they used them quite alot. In science we had sevral science programs, basically watching videos and seeing how reactions work (sometimes able to play with the different factors) that kind of thing. Used the computers loads in languages - The school being a language college kinda helped. We had headsets and everyone practiced talking to eachother whilst viewing documents on the computer. We also used educational websites and listened to recorded people speaking. Teachers could also listen in to check people were doing what they were told ;)

What programs did you use the most overall in secondary school?
Microsoft word/access/powerpoint/excel
Internet Explorer
Divace Duo

Do you feel your education benefitted from the ICT facilities in your school?
Yes - I suppose it just made things more exciting, they have lots of new equipment now making more things possible such as powerpoint presentations in avilable in most classrooms. Infact they even had one of those things where theres a question on a massive board and everyone has remotes and they all pick an answer (kinda like ask the audience in who wants to be a millionaire) these kind of things really made people concentrate more. When they're new atleast. Ofcourse it makes research much easier and improved typing skills.

Sorry it looks like i wrote alot there :p think i got a bit carried away.

How many computers were there in your school?
~200

How many students were there in your school?
~1000

Did or does your school have a Local Area Network?
Yes

Did or does your school have internet access?
Not when I started, but it went from single ISDN>DUAL ISDN>2MB Govmt sponsored ADSL

Which of these subjects were/are computers used in the most?
English/Science (although there was a dedicated IT lesson which was more than both)

How were the computer used in this subject?
Word processing and displaying of animations/videos/graphical material

What programs did you use the most overall in secondary school?
I.E. and the RM student manager thingy (I hacked the network for a long long time before I got busted and had my account cut off)

Do you feel your education benefitted from the ICT facilities in your school?
No.

Explain your answer
They taught me very little about computers and the way in which they were used was inefficient and just to show off the fact that there were PCs in the school. My whole GCSE IT course was a joke, useless teachers, useless course material and using useless software. For example, we used MS access to manage a client list which was basicly an address book, much more suitable for excel or a purpose built contact manager?

What programs did you use the most overall in secondary school?
That turtle blip thing where it follows basic coordinates, you enter, around the screen

Do you feel your education benefitted from the ICT facilities in your school?
Yes/No (delete as appropriate)
Yes, Sort of

Explain your answer.
The Computer studies teacher, Mister Ross, was a complete and utter twat; he said I wasn't allowed to join the computer club because I had a 'bad reputation' with some of the other teachers, without even giving me a chance. I think he made me want to know about computers even more after that.

They were only used for IT lessons which i used to bunk out of because they were too easy.

Basic word processing, image manipulation, spreadsheets, etc. All work saved to floppy disk. Although i used to use them for random number generation whilst playing monopoly with a friend.

Yes/No (delete as appropriate)
Nope, not at all. Didn't really get interested in computers till i went off to university and we had 24hour IT labs with x-terms running in them to play on and email from.

I was obviously feeling old this morning, or my mental arithmetic was clearly not functioning - that should read '1992'.

How many computers were there in your school?
I'd guess about 100 over three well-equipped rooms, newly installed and close-to fully-functional in my final year (99/00).

How many students were there in your school?
Approx. 1250

Did or does your school have a Local Area Network?
Yes

Yes, filtered, though not 100% working whilst I was there

Which of these subjects were/are computers used in the most?
Science, English, IT, Business Studies.

How were the computer used in this subject?
Mainly for 'typing up' essays (2 were required to be typed up for English GCSE, iirc), spreadsheet/database work, some DTP, and LOGO! Science lessons had a variety of specific learning programs - basically animations, funny sounds, experiments you could control.

What programs did you use the most overall in secondary school?
Word. (yawn)

Do you feel your education benefitted from the ICT facilities in your school?
Not at all, no.

Explain your answer.
For me, computers have always been things to experiment with, and not just as tools towards the ends of another goal.
