In (and I can't believe I'm doing this) Gordon Broon's defence; he used the "Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001" to seize Icelandic assets when they reneged on a government promise to underwrite their losses, NOT, the anti-terrorism part, and using the Crime element of the act, he was probably right to do so.

Its all very well for the Icelanders to play the "plucky little country at the mercy of that nasty Gordon Brown" card, but they were quite happy to take the benefit of their banking boom when times were good. I know they're in the shit big time right now, but its not just UKGov and disgruntled UK depositors who are pissed off, most of the other Scandinavian countries have been burned by their incompetence as well. Say what you like about our banking sector, at least we have some regulation, Iceland seems to be like the Wild West.

not to defend them or in any other way get involved, but it seems to me that Icelanders aren't playing at anything. imo they're trying to recover from an awesomely scary financial crisis and tbh imo the UK is in absolutely no position at all to pass judgement on anyone else, either from a financial or any other standpoint.

that aside, I saw gigs by For A Minor Reflection, Agent Fresco and We Made God yesterday, along with bits of various artists gigs. pretty cool for a first day. Imo Agent Fresco was the highlight of the evening.

Britain has stood by its obligations to underwrite deposits (and increased the amount underwritten), Iceland has reneged; so yes, the UK is in a position to pass judgement. Sorry Teeds, but its fairly black and white from a financial pov.

No he's not. He's seizing assets because Iceland refused to fulfil its obligations at all.

at that moment it was completely impossible for Iceland to do much of anything. events had progressed much further than they had thought possible. tbh what I read in Dutch papers lead me to understand that Iceland was going to follow the letter of the their agreements, they just couldn't at the time. I don't mean to pretend to understand anything about international finance but it seems to me that GB just took a completely ridiculous step at a time where Iceland could have benefited more from some time to clear up their mess. You speak of regulation, yet you must also be aware that when a crisis occurs sometimes things go differently to what you'd like, surely.

anyways...back to teh MUSIC! I've seen:
thu: Gus Gus, Fuck Buttons, Naflakusk, Florence & The Machine
fri: Seabear, Munich, Reykjavik!, These New Puritans, Benni Hemm Hemm
sat: up to now um.... FM Belfast, Jóhann Kristinsson and there's some bunch of screaming lunatics playing right here next to where I am now who I think are not part of Airwaves but fun never the less :)

Currently a tie between Agent Fresco and Florence & The Machine as fave bands of the event. Pics may follow, but as we've both not brought laptops because eacht of us thought the other one was bringing his times are hard hehe. Current non-Airwaves highlight was driving the unsealed Route 52 from Reykholt to Þingvellir through some awesomely barren landscapes.
