I did that after i sent an email to them about 2months back, i did the FT and it passed with no problems so??

Scary to think that my Drive maybe in "danger" of been damaged tho, even tho it hasnt showed any signs of "damage"

Had a 45 Gig 75GXP drive, died. Lost everything.

Eventually it fucked up so bad the system would hang to the point of not accepting keyboard strokes. Im not sure but I have a feeling this might be due to the hdd not allowing windows to the swap file, mainly because of it being fucked, so of course, windows without a swap file or just disk access in general... well.
Ever put in a floppy/ls120 and watched as the system utterly grinds to a halt and 5 minutes later tells you the disk isnt formatted? /me spits.

Changed it for a 40 gig 60GXP, seems... to be ok, not really had any problems with it.

Bought a 60 Gig 60GXP drive, died. Lost everything again.
When testing with the fitness test it said "excessive shock", which for a computer that sits on the floor and never gets moved seems like ibms easy way out of giving you a new drive.

Bought a 120 Gig er... think its a 60 GXP too, not... bad to be honest, but now its full, the data is obviously more compact and the amount of the times the drive seeks the wrong sector and resets is growing day by day. Its part of a spanned volume set too, so it gets filled to the brim first in a linear fashion before filling the next drive in the chain (happens to be a new maxtor 120 Gig Disk, its not bad).

The 60 Gig 60GXP drive actually started to fail after I bought the 120, if it had before I'm sure I would have learned my lesson, as I have now, and I can quite clearly say with confidence DONT GO NEAR THESE MODELS OR INDEED ANY IBM DRIVES CIRCA 2003.

IBM's sheer arrogance at not admitting a problem to the point of denying one exists and not apologising is disgusting, they have lost my trade forever and anyone who asks my opinion shall be told the truth, they are complete dog turd.

My 30 gig 75GXP died after 11 months, the 40 gig 60GXP that it was exchanged for (at no cost thankfully) has been in for about 16 months now and seems to be ok, not had any clicks, beeps or problems.

I'm sure I will though hence the recent purchase of 2 * WD 80gig 8 meg cache cavier jobbies!

FUcking IBM. I've bought 4 Deskstar 60gb 60gxp's over the past 2 years and 2 of them have completely died on me. I've now moved over to Maxtor, whose 120gb is doing splendidly 15 months down the line. :)

I had a 75GXP, and it died on me 2 weeks after I got it. Got a replacement and it's worked since, which has been about 18 months now. Still, gonna go for Maxtor or Seagate next time.

"Next time" does that mean you dont trust your IBM? ;)

Im suprised by the number of people who have had IBM Harddrives on this forum.... and by the number of times they have said they have "died" on them....

Why are you suprised?

The deskstar name before the 75gxp series hit the shelves was a very good drive, I've got a 20 gig still going strong in my lounge computer.

Also the new 75gxp series boasted good performance for the price it was sold at and boasted the highly sought after and trusted brand name, IBM. People flocked to buy them, and then once everyone had been coaxed into getting one they started to die...

The deskstar is now in its 6th (or something like that) incarnation, it had models before the 75, 60, 120 and now 180 gxp and I dont believe even by this incarnation they've sorted out the major problems.

Shame because when I was younger an IBM hard drive was considered the best thing going. Western Digital and Maxtor were utter, utter shite, which has now completely reversed. Fujitsu used to make very good drives that lasted too, and that has reveresed also.

Maybe hitachi will get things back on track. Maybe not.

Like Dime said, the Deskstar range ruled the roost in performance terms and thats why it became so popular.....although it could also be why they don't tend to last too long.

Not all Deskstars are equal.

I've got 2x 34GXPs humming merrily away in my machine as they have done for at least three years, most of that time was 24/7, I just got a 120GXP as they seem to have a good record so far.

Its been a known fact that 60GXPs and 75GXPs are failing, I'd have certainly changed mine a long time ago.

Check out Storage Review as they now have a reliability database compiled from users' experience.

Nope, not a bit. I still keep anything really important on my 30Gb Maxtor drive, which is 5 years old and still running superbly.

:)

I must also note that my 6 year old 1.6 gig Fujitsu hard drive is still faultless!

As is my 10 yr old 250mb drive. It probably wouldn't be had I been using it regularly though.

You'll notice that the problem is now so severe that IBM now only offer 1 year RTB warranties on their products - and most of them fail in their second year......

I'll be buying Maxtor from now on - I back up all my importatnt stuff onto CD every couple of weeks.......

Parents always getting stupidly good PC's without even knowing it. And they don't need it - my mum just bought a 2.4ghz Dell system essentially just to read emails. :(

The WD 8megs are very good, although not worth me replacing all my maxtors with em.

Aye, I know what you mean callous. This time, however, my dad does actually need an upgrade: he does 3d cad stuff. Hence the need for a quadro too :|
